America doesnt talk with Terrorists but Sri Lanka shouldShenali WadugeThis statement clearly underlies the sad and hypocritical predicament facing Sri Lanka. Countries that have identified the LTTE as terrorists and have gone to the extent of banning them in their own country presses the Government of Sri Lanka to sit and hold chit chats with these murderers.
There is definitely something wrong in this equation. How can the LTTE be considered a terrorist entity for some and at the same time be considered a liberation movement fighting for a just cause in the very country they originate their terror activities from? Unfortunately it is these double standards that have forced the Government to sign and maintain peace accords and cease fire agreements with these murderers & even end up dancing to their merry tunes????
It is really time for the international community to tap their hearts and honestly ask themselves which direction they want to see Sri Lanka going? When successive Governments decided to place the issue of the LTTE on the international arena they expected support to see an end to the bloodshed and suicides that were taking place as a result of a coward hiding in the Wanni jungles who dares to only engage in guerilla warfare & brainwashes his men and women to blowing themselves up on a false premise of obtaining martyrdom. Why should only these meek Tamil men & women become martyrs why dont Prabakaran and his cabinet of murderers also become martyrs then?
The people of Sri Lanka had a lot of faith in the international community. We thought that the speeches of their leaders war on terror etc would mean that they would help us to annihilate the LTTE once and for all. But the international community has ended up giving more headaches to the people of Sri Lanka as time and time again they end up using the terrorist problem as a means to tighten the noose on us by drawing us more and more into debt. True the successive Governments in governance havent helped either which is why Sri Lanka is in such a predicament and explains why it is always the ordinary people who end up suffering but surely there must be an end. For how long does the International Community want this charade to continue?
How many more diplomatic communiqués does the international community plan to release whenever the LTTE decides to strike at innocent targets? How many more child recruitment reports does the UN body hope to release on child soldier recruitment by the LTTE before they actually do something about it? How long will foreign Governments ignore transport of arms and ammunition from their ports sent clandestinely to the LTTE? And how many more children of LTTE leaders will end up educating themselves in foreign shores while the children of Sri Lanka live in constant fear?
So long as this type of hypocrisies continue Sri Lanka will never find peace.
Is it not time that the International Community wake up and face the reality of the situation and try to rectify the present situation in Sri Lanka by being accountable for the sorry state to which they have become party to.
