THREACHERY RACISM AND VIOLENCE

Daya Hewapathirane

The Leadership of Sri Lanka should not overlook the fact that Tamil Treachery, Racism and Violence are the Real Reasons for Sri Lanka's National Security Problems and the most gruesome and deceitful attitude of most Tamils and their support base.

RACIST INCLINATION OF TAMILS
It is the commonly held view that the large majority of Tamils are supportive of the terrorist LTTE, wherever they may be living and whatever may be their occupation. The reasons they cite for this inclination are unfounded, being based on false information that cannot be backed with concrete evidence. The real reason for this attitude is nothing but racism on the part of most Tamils. This has been the case all along in the past. This racist inclination continues today, much like their strong caste system and associated brutal discrimination. It is only a small handful of Tamils, in the last couple of years, who have had the courage and have taken the initiative to declare their opposition to the racist terrorist LTTE. This again is for selfish reasons, because their family, friends or political party members have been massacred ruthlessly by the LTTE.

The deep seated interests of most Tamils are in any case focused narrowly and exclusively on the welfare of their own kind, their own interests, and not on the general welfare of the people of the nation as a whole. They have never supported the idea of nation building in our country, but more concerned on separation from the rest of the country with a false claim of an imagined “Tamil Homeland” in the North and East of the country.

BRAINWASHED AGAINST SINHELA
The racist Tamil terrorists have been brainwashed, invariably by some foreign ruling elite and their social, religious and business institutions, to ask for Tamilnadu National rights in the motherland of the indigenous Sinhela people. And this, by resorting to the most ruthless terrorist means, killing our people, disrupting the functioning of our institutions, and systematically destroying and causing disrepute to everything that gives us pride and identity as a nation. They are destroying the good image of our country with an international campaign of false propaganda, misleading the international community, using crude and most deceitful means which civilized people would not resort to.

Most of the young Tamils, especially those who grew up in the North, have been severely brainwashed from childhood, with utterly false and delusional information about the country and its majority Sinhela people. The degree of brainwashing has been so extreme, that these people are unable to think beyond the beliefs that they are blinded with. They have been most deceitfully brainwashed that the Sinhela people are their enemies and are criminals who are out to get the Tamils. They have been made to believe that the land belongs to them and it is their traditional homeland.

TAMILS HAVE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
It is a fact that more than half of the country’s Tamil population live in and are employed in predominantly Sinhela areas, among the Sinhela and other people without any harassment or discrimination. For that matter the number living in Sinhela areas shows a strikingly increasing trend in recent times. This is in opposition to the predominantly Tamil areas in the North and East where no one other than Tamils are permitted.

Most Tamils are either businessmen or professionals, some working for the government and others lucratively self employed with the Sinhela majority being their growing clientele and patrons. Most Tamil businesses, big and small are dependent on the Sinhela market for success in their businesses and professions. In other words, they earn their living using the Sinhela hospitality, the Sinhela market, the Sinhela clients, and the Sinhela people. In spite of this, it is peculiar of them, in that they rarely if at all, employ Sinhela or non-Tamil people in their establishments. Some of the largest wholesale and retail businesses in Colombo are owned and run by Tamils. Most jewelry establishments, travel agencies, telecommunications outlets are owned and operated by them. The rich Tamils in Colombo and other urban areas in Sinhela areas are owners of high-priced property including land and houses and expensive vehicles and other luxuries. They are constantly involved international travel.

They have their own food outlets such as ‘thoosa kade’, their Tamil newspapers, magazines, videos, music audios, films and are free to intermingle with others in Sinhela neighborhoods without being harassed. They have their ‘kovils’ and religious and cultural organizations and related activities with no restriction placed on them by the Sinhela community. Kovils in fact are patronized by some Sinhela people. In these kovils and on city streets they freely organize festivals, ‘poojas’, processions and “theru” festivities with no hindrance from the Sinhela people.
However, it is important to note that Tamils rarely if at all participate in Sinhela, Buddhist or for that matter national festivals and functions. This applies even to their political leaders.

FREEDOM FROM VIOLENCE AND INSECURITY
During the past three decades, these non-indigenous racist Tamil terrorists have taken away from the indigenous Sinhela majority, what they have valued and cherished most as a nation – their freedom and peaceful life. Owing to the racist attitude and activities of Tamils and their leaders, today, the indigenous Sinhela nationals are faced with a severe struggle for peace, freedom and justice.

Our people will never be free from violence and insecurity, as long as we foolishly abide by the illusion of peace and security through the so called “peace talks” with these racist Tamil terrorists. Our leaders continue to be misled and fail to realize that these Tamil terrorists are a gang of uncompromising racist murderers, bent on terrorism as a means to achieve their illegitimate, unwarranted and selfish ends. We have had enough of this meaningless “peace- talks” promoted by the modern version of “white Christian imperialists”. The white Christian imperialists hypocritically talk a lot on democracy and human rights, but fail to acknowledge that terrorism is a total rejection of the democratic method, and that is what the racist Tamil terrorist LTTE is all about.

THE NATIONS EMANCIPATION
For our nation’s emancipation, there can be no compromise with racist terrorists. The territorial integrity and sovereignty of our motherland is of fundamental importance to us. During the past few decades Sri Lanka's territorial integrity has been threatened by these racist Tamil terrorists. Our present political leaders have vouched that they will not allow our sovereignty as a nation to be undermined or sacrificed, and the territorial integrity of our country destroyed. This policy has the overflowing support of the nationalistic forces. It is time that we initiated necessary action to eliminate the threats to the revival of our nation and start reinstating our nation, and restoring its wholesome culture and values. From historic times the Sinhela community has not objected to, but accommodated all non-indigenous communities and religious groups that wished to establish themselves in our country. We did that and lived together as a single integrated and cohesive nation.

Thousands of our true sons of the soil have sacrificed their precious lives while serving with dedication to protect the majority interest of our country. They joined the struggle that cost them their youthful lives. Many have died and many more have gone missing in this national calamity. The nation will for ever be grateful to them for the sacrifice they have made in the name of our country, in order to preserve national harmony and peace.

OBLIGATION OF LEADERS
Our leaders need to realize that they have an obligation by the nation and most importantly by the people who provided them with the opportunity and have placed them in those leadership positions.
Our leaders at all levels and capacities – political, defense and security services, professional, religious, cultural and social, have an obligation by our people, by our future generations, to come to the forefront to save the nation from this evil Tamil terrorists. Our Buddhist Maha-sangha, our doctors, our lawyers, our university professors, our teachers, our leaders in other professions including our business leaders, our community leaders and youth leaders, ALL concerned Sinhela and other concerned non-indigenous minority settler community members, should break their silence, should become vociferous and make it a joint venture to subdue the nations cruel enemy, the enemy of our future generations. It is everyone’s national and moral obligation to see that justice is done, that justice prevails and freedom restored to the large mass of people of this nation. The racist LTTE terrorists should be eliminated if a lasting peace is to be achieved. Those who cause social disarray destroy the well-being of others and sow seeds of chaos should not be tolerated should be taken to task.

MISSION OF NATIONALISTS
There has to be a new loyalty to our country’s freedom. Our Hela armed forces should be made to focus directly and forcefully on our country’s freedom. Our armed forces should pave the way to the liberation of our nation by destroying Tamil terrorists, their abodes, their installations and everything that forms their terrorist infrastructure. Our armed forces require the complete support of our people in order to do what is expected of them in the most efficient manner.

The sense of mission of the Hela nationals should be the salvation of our motherland from terrorism and its evil consequences. We should not admit any compromises and reservations but work jointly with dedication, to eradicate racist Tamil terrorism which is the cause of all the misery and instability in our nation. The whole idea is to help prevent violence. This should be perceived as a most worthy, commendable and meritorious act by everybody.

No “Chinthanaya” for overall development of our country is possible or will succeed by allowing this menace to continue in our country.

Our country needs the support and co-operation of people on a continuous basis, in order to contain and manage terrorism and its aftermath effectively. The large majority of the nation’s intelligentsia, rural masses and youth of our country are behind the mission for eliminating whatever forces that undermine peace and cultural revival in our nation, for the common good of all those who value this land as their motherland.

UNDUE FOREIGN INTERFERENCE
The fact remains, that ours is a sovereign and independent country with its own indigenous culture integrating most harmoniously with pluralism both in terms of ethnicity and religion. Like any other country, there are some issues of concern that need to be sorted out in time. However, the issue with our country is that some foreign interests have incited and virtually misled some extremist local elements to capitalize on some of these issues by magnifying them as colossal problems. The strength of our majority race and religion has become an eyesore to many foreign countries who are hell bent on destroying this fabric through distortions, wide international publicity through media channels and other devious means.

DEARTH OF STRONG LEADERS
Under the circumstances, our leaders and the government need to stand strong, committed and forthright to defend our country. We need sensible, bold and sincere leaders who can withstand the many pressures that they will be subject to from foreign countries, at the cost of our national security, peace and harmony. We need our leaders to realize the fact that no foreign power will "help us" or "sympathize with us" without an ulterior motive. What could be the plausible explanation as to why these so called “international community” is so concerned about a small island such as ours, except for her strategic location and real and potential resources which are of strategic and geopolitical value for foreign powers who are hunting for targets to achieve their own agendas?

The lack of bold, honest and enlightened leadership in our country which is plagued by economic miseries, corruption and divisive tendencies and attitudes, provide foreign powers such as the USA and India in particular, the ability to indirectly but effectively enforce their will, their own approaches to the definition, interpretation and resolution of our national problems. This is the sad truth of the matter.

The majority of this country has elected a government and politicians to responsible positions through elections to safeguard and protect our country from every manner of danger. It is the bounden duty of this government to show their commitment to those who elected them, and to ensure that they do what is right for the country and not what foreign powers want them to do. For whatever reasons, our politicians appear to be lacking in the strength of character to do that.

HYPOCRICY OF THE WEST
It has become clear to those who have carefully observed the events that have been unfolding in the international scene in recent years that the world will never be truly free from the threat of terrorism so long as we are promised the illusion of peace and security dressed in the language of war. Isn’t this what the leaders of the Western world are doing? They are not interested in seeking out the root causes of terrorism because that means something that they do not want – which is a change in their policy towards the rest of the world - the impoverished and exploited mass of humanity.

As far as the “international community” headed by the USA is concerned, their sheer definition of our national problem is flawed. When evidence to the contrary is unambiguously clear, it is nothing but hypocritical for these countries with double standards, to continue defining our problem as an ethnic problem. No serious attempt has been made by the government or the previous governments, to focus on this incorrect view and forcefully establish facts connected with our problem. It is the government’s responsibility to show the world citing the overwhelming evidence readily available, that what we have is a terrorist problem and not an ethnic problem.

NOT ETHNIC BUT A TERRORIST PROBLEM
The large preponderance of the Sinhela, Tamil and Muslim communities is living together peacefully. Tamil terrorists have created a problem of violence and atrocities in the country. Our governments, then and now have failed to show the world community that our problem was brought about by a small group of racist Tamil fanatics, initially trained and nurtured in India, with the full knowledge and support of the Indian government which boasts as the world’s biggest democracy. Also, it is a fact that these racist Tamil terrorists have been strengthened by direct and indirect assistance from Western countries, ironically, including those considered today as the “international community”.

Our governments have failed to prove to the world community, that it is deceitful propaganda and false information publicized by a group of terrorists, which has led to a dissolute and wanton misinterpretation of the reasons for the problem. The international community has been grossly misled by the Tamil terrorists who are not supported by the majority of Tamils living among the other communities.

This misguided interpretation of the problem and the resultant false attitude towards our government on the part of the so called international community headed by the USA, and the Co-Chairs of the ‘peace process’, are in no way helpful in finding a realistic solution to the problem the country.

As long as we bow down to these invalid perceptions and interpretations, we will fail to have peace in our country or to solve the terrorist problem the country is confronted with. How can ours be an ethnic problem when the majority of Tamils and other minorities live peacefully among the Sinhela majority in a good part of the country? It is a fact that all terrorists of the country are Tamils, but all Tamils are not involved in terrorism.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND DEMOCRATIC APPROACH
One of the most discouraging aspects of the approach of the “international community” is its sheer disregard for the historical context of the problem or in other words, the clear lack of weight accorded to the historic circumstances surrounding the terrorist problem.

Also, a most discouraging aspect of their approach is ironically, its lack of respect for the democratic approach of seeking majority view and thereby national consensus on this national problem. Unlike most developing countries, we have a politically mature and enlightened electorate of educated electors, whose perceptions deserve recognition in this equation.

The attitude of the so called international community and their approach to the resolution of this problem are definite deterrents to finding a solution that is acceptable to the large mass of people of the country. Their attitude in a way is high-handed because it disregards public opinion in our country. The will of the majority of people is definitely the elimination of terrorism from our country.

The attitude of the International community pays no attention to the need to obtain the views of our people at large who are directly faced with and suffer the consequences of this lingering national problem. The general public in our country has clearly expressed democratically their objection to LTTE terrorism. They were supportive of the Mahinda Chinthanaya proposal to eradicate terrorism from the face of the country, at the last Presidential elections.

The so called international community appears to be holding a wrong perception of how our people define our problem and perceive the reasons for the problem. They appear to be unaware of or to disregard the approaches and strategies identified and supported by the majority of people as ways of resolving the problem. Our leaders appear to be scared of the so called “International Community". We are burdened by a state whose only function is to subsidize capital. We are constrained and bounded by the IMF, the ADB, the LTTE and by our lack of vision, our own ignorance, stupidity and arrogance.

Racist Tamil terrorists and those supportive of them should share a greater part of the blame for the lack of progress in the country, in areas such as national peace and security, observance of democratic principles in governance, lack of overall development and improved quality of life of people. It is time the country’s leadership used the power available to it in a firm and positive manner for the overall benefit of the nation and not for its individual political gains.
