Freed Cattle used for a better causeShenali Waduge
Sri Lanka may be proud to call itself a Buddhist country but It is believed that daily 2000 cattle are slaughtered to cater to the taste buds of those who consume beef. We are also aware that there are many kind hearted souls who either individually or in groups get together to collect money & try to save a cow or two from being taken to the slaughter house. While this act merits applause it also begs to question where these cows land up eventually? They may be saved once but they may likely to be dragged again to the slaughter house to end up as meat on a platter. I would therefore like to suggest that some group makes a national effort to take these saved cattle & give to poor homes & encourage these people to start a business venture themselves. With the ever rising prices on powdered milk, if the poor could be encouraged to start the distribution of dairy milk it would be the beginning of a steady income & children too would be able to drink good milk at a better price & the cattle themselves would be saved from slaughter. However, those who are tasked with saving these cattle from the slaughter homes would need to effectively work out the most suited impoverished homes to gift the cattle who would do justice to the gift.
