Ear-Boxing for Irresponsible Media Jokers by the Supreme CourtSisira Pereira, Panadura
It is to the utmost joy of all patriotic citizens of Sri Lanka that the country witnessed the public slap handed by the Supreme Court to the so-called Biggest Broadcasting Company in Asia, the ABC network. The SC ordered immediate cancellation of the broadcasting license of ABC on the grounds that it had been obtained unlawfully in the first place. To add insult to injury, the SC reprimanded the ABC's managing director for misleading the court by lying in an affidavit submitted to the SC. The General Manager of the self-proclaimed biggest broadcasting company in Asia, on purpose, had tried to withhold crucial facts from his statement under oath, with a mind to mislead the highest Court of the country, the SC concluded. May be the General Manager had thought that he could employ their many a time tested tactic of reporting a distorted picture of the actual and get away with it, as in most cases, where the public believed their stone lies as gospel truth.
But, this time, the General Manager of ABC broadcasting Company, chose the wrong domain to play his usual tricks. His petition against the government was thrown away by the SC and his license cancelled. He had also received an earful from the Bench.
Some of the private-owned radio stations in Sri Lanka have played a major role in brainwashing the citizens of this country for far too long with private agendas on the sidelines, having shown no respect to issues of National Security. At a time when the country needs to rally up together to enable the fight against the ruthless LTTE to see a successful end, these explosive-laden-submarine-like media companies surface all of a sudden to ram into the public domain with the objective of blowing up public sanity with the intention of creating chaos. These so-called media kings have let its maverick cadre continue to do the damage with impunity and get away with the sabotage thanks to their guardian angels like Free Media Movement and Media without Fronties, etc. No sooner that these ill-thinking media jokers create a blunder and are taken to task by the Government, the FMM is readily there to issue press statements condemning the government for attacking the media. And more often than not, the successive governments had been made to kneel before the Media Giants and the media culprits escaped unscathed.
These Media jokers think that they are above the law. They also think that the public can be manipulated to achieve their ends there by underpinning the forward march of the Sri Lanka Defense Forces to annihilate the LTTE. Therefore, they pull all the tricks up their sleeves when the time is ripe for such actions. They know they can do that and conveniently cause the damage and get away with it. The FMM is there to watch its back.
But this time, the Media Giant's usual bravado did not pay off nor did the public attempt by the FMM was heeded by the Supreme Court. The highest Court saw through the plot and correctly called the black, black.
So should do the public who listen to these media jokers joking every second of their life.
In my view, the General Manager should be handed the maximum penalty allowed under the law for his blatant attempt to conceal the truth to the Supreme Courts.
Long live the Judiciary of Sri Lanka!. Let this be a warning and a lesson to other media personnel and their companies too. |
