Towards an End.By Viduragomi Vithana, UKThose who live by sword die by sword. Finally natural justice has been delivered on the number two of the terrorist outfit. The time is ticking for the number one. It is only a matter of when rather than if, for everything in this world is transient in nature. If the government continues with the right strategy peace is not that far away. However, implementation of this strategy calls for sacrifice from every citizen of our nation for the sake of future generations. Our gallant security forces would have finished the job long time ago. Outside interference and treachery by various quarters prevented this. Vadamarachchi operation had to be stopped due to Indian interference. Thereafter, the IPKF came close to finishing the job. Unfortunately, President Premadasa succumbed to JVP pressure to send the Indians back. Then there was half hearted military campaign, "war for peace" by Kumaratunga administration, for which our soldiers paid a heavy price. Then the infamous Norwegian sponsored so called, "peace process" of Ranil Wickremasinghe during which time, LTTE quite successfully internationalised the separatist cause as well as built up its military strength. By the looks of it, government of President Rajapakse seems to have a plan. Based on empirical evidence, one could say this strategy appears to be quite successful so far. The terrorists have been chased away from the East depriving them of a launching pad to strike at the South. A reservoir of manpower in the east has been taken away from them. SLN recently destroyed several floating arsenal in high seas. SLAF has been successful in destroying training camps and military assets of the terrorists in Vanni. Amongst them, the raid on the terrorist gathering which killed Thamil Selvam has been the most significant. Clever intelligence gathering and use of cutting edge technology tilt the balance in any war. The government's successes appear to reflect this reality. Though one cannot deny that there have been shortcomings and failures. Sensitive military information including hardware and technology used by the forces are still being discussed openly in the media. Security arrangements in camps and military installations are questionable. The government is struggling to neutralise the threat from the so called LTTE "air force" as evidenced from Katunayake bombing and Anuradhapura debacle. However, objectively viewed, from an overall perspective, the government has been remarkably successful in its military campaign. This policy is diametrically opposed to the UNP's strategy of appeasing the terrorists by turning a blind eye to their murders and arms smuggling while pursuing an imaginary peace process which did not hold on ground. The disclosure to the media of military personnel involved in Athurugiriya military safe house resulted in hundreds of intelligence operatives to be singled out and physically eliminated by LTTE. Murder of security force personnel continued with impunity throughout this so called peace process. The Mantra of the international community has been that Sri Lanka should negotiate with the terrorists. Why - because we are a poor nation which can not afford war. America and Great Britain would not negotiate with the terrorists. But put them out of business going as far as invading sovereign countries. This Mantra is repeated by IC's local agent - UNP. Whether rich or poor when a group of terrorists challenge the sovereignty and integrity of a country, state has the right to destroy them. For Sri Lanka this is the most opportune time to do so. What we have today is a worn out LTTE which is at its weakest. They might have retained some guerrilla capability, but it can not overrun military camps as they did in the 80s and 90s. Karuna has defected. They have lost the strategically important East. Both Bala and Thamil Selvam are no more. LTTE is said to be facing a severe man power problem while SLDF have affectively prevented their fire power replenishment. In the southern political front, there is a coming together of an array of patriotic forces to support the government from a very wide spectrum of political opinion. These, factors provide opportune conditions for a final strike at the terrorist heartland. Therefore, those patriotic Sri Lankans who wish to see an end to this terrorist menace and wish a peaceful future for their children and grand children should give unwavering support to this government, a few years of working space at least, to execute its military strategy. The only way to bring peace to our nation is by eliminating terrorism militarily and consolidating it with the implementation of a comprehensive power devolution. The opportunistic, UNP-LTTE-Norway-IC nexus, is hell bent on toppling
this government to give oxygen to a decaying terrorist outfit. Cost
of living and Human Rights are slogans these traitors use to put bait
on unsuspecting people. In times of war, people in various countries
have undergone economic hardships in the past. During the second World
War foods and clothes had to be rationed in the Great Britain. When
members of our gallant forces make the supreme sacrifice to rid this
nation of the cancer of terrorism, forgoing a meal or two is the least
ordinary people like us could do. |
