UN Double standards exposed

Akila Weerasekera

On Thursday, January 4th, Israel Defense Forces undercover troops entered the West Bank town of Ramallah on an arrest raid, setting off protests and gunbattles in the center of town. Four Palestinian civilians were killed and 20 wounded as a result of the raid.

Isreali Prime Minister Ehud Olmert apologized for the deaths of civilians, but defended Israel's incursion as an operation aimed at stopping terrorists responsible for the death of Israeli citizens. United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Margareta Wahlström or any other so-called Humanitarian organizations did not issue any statements condemning the Israeli raid.

On Wednesday, January 3rd, Sri Lankan Air Force Kafir attack aircrafts bombed a LTTE tiger heavy gun position in the North. Soon after the attack, the UN accused the Sri Lankan government of killing 14 civilians, including six children and further mentioned that more than 4,000 people are being displaced from the fighting last year were sheltered in the LTTE-controlled coastal village of Illupaikadavai in Mannar district where the bombing was carried out.

Also, the UN is urging once more for a cessation of hostilities between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE and resumption of the peace process. In other words the UN is urging a sovereign state and a terrorist organization to conduct peace talks, violating the rules of democracy.

The Sri Lankan government has all the right to carry out pre-emptive strikes against any enemy that try to destroy the sovereignty of our motherland. We need to take the right precautions to prevent any terrorist attacks against the Sri Lankan citizens the same way the Israelis protect their people.

Shutting the stable door after the horse escaped like situations and the double standard treatment of the so called international community should be put behind us and more counter-terrorism procedures should be taken. Also, all the peace loving citizens in Sri Lanka should support our military to eradicate the LTTE.
