James Ross interferes to accuse
Karuna Amman without any acceptable
evidence- If at all Karuna is to be prosecuted for his past crimes,
it has to be decided by the Government of Sri Lanka.
By Charles S Perera
What is happening to these great International Humanitarians ? They
are becoming not only a blood thirsty race of hoodlums, but also a senseless
howlers contradicting their own principles and those of the International
Community.
The International Community and all the peaceniks are crying in one
voice that the Government of Sri Lanka should come to a negotiated peace
settlements with ruthless belligerent LTTE terrorists, who are known
to have child soldiers, human bombs, who kidnap children, kill civilians,
kill their opponents, explode bombs in trains and buses, kill Presidents,
Prime Ministers, and civilians, and here is James Ross, the so called
Legal and Policy Director of the New York Based Human Rights Watch,
asking the British Government to prosecute Karuna Amman the former Military
Commander of the Tamil Tiger "Militants".
James Ross may either be in another planet or just woken from his day
dreaming. He must be thinking that he is the great brain and the man
empowered by the creator to settle human rights violations in the world.
What a goon he is not to realise that Karuna is after all a man who
had given up terrorism to fall in line with the democratic process.
All accusations against him that he had kidnapped children for his armed
insurgent force, have not been proved. The new vague of European human
rights activists get their information from the LTTE
terrorist sympathisers and accuse Karuna and the Government for
violation of human rights. But very strangely they have so far not accused
the LTTE Terrorists as violators of human rights.
These human rights activists cannot imagine how terrorists could be
lured into giving up armed terror to join the democratic process. It
is by showing that they are able to accept and pardon those terrorists,
if they give up their terrorism and lay down arms to follow a democratic
process, that they can convince them and others terrorists to follow
suit.
If on the other hand a former terrorist who had given up terrorism
to follow a democratic process is prosecuted, it will not at all encourage
other terrorists to follow suit.
It is hoped that the British Government will not take seriously these
misguided humanitarians such as James Ross, and Lucia Withers and the
rest. If at all Karuna Amman is to be prosecuted for his past crimes,
it is a matter entirely for the Government of Sri Lanka to decide, not
the ill informed individuals and organisations like the
Human Rights Watch to decide. Karuna has been arrested by the
British police for not having proper travel documents, and if Great
Britain is to prosecute him it is only for that he could be prosecuted.
James Ross of the New York Based Human Rights Watch is pretentiously
coming forward with false accusations against Karuna Amman, as if he
could influence the British Government to accede to his proposition.
James Ross says that, " for a case to proceed, there has to be
sufficient evidence that someone has been responsible for an act of
torture themselves or can be connected to acts of torture. That can
be difficult to prove. Often there are no witnesses. The most likely
evidence would be in the form of testimony from people who say they
themselves have been victims of torture, carried out by Col Karuna or
by people under his command.
So the challenge for human rights groups is to gather evidence which
is strong enough to convince the British authorities that there may
be grounds for prosecution and to present it to them while Col Karuna
is
still in the country ". Of course, it may be easy for human rights
activists to gather information, because there are lot of LTTE terrorist
sympathizers living in Great, Britain, Canada or America.
But can their statements be accepted as evidence in a British Court
of Law ?
If James Ross has any right to accuse violators of human rights as he
pretends to be, he should then take up the case of Prabhakaran, and
his group of terrorists who had not only been violating human rights
of the civilian population in the areas under their control, but also
assassinated number of civilians in and out side the areas under their
control.
These international interferers had praised Thamil Selvam as the smiling
face of the terrorists, not wanting to accept him as a criminal, or
a terrorist. So what right has James Ross to accuse Karuna Amman who
has given up terrorism, unlike ThamilSelvam who had been a terrorists
unto his last.
Ross accepts that he has no sufficient evidence for a prosecution of
Karuna Amman for human rights violations and says that the challenge
for human rights groups is to gather evidence which is strong enough
to convince the British authorities. What a blood thirsty, in human
lot are these human rights activists that interfere into the affairs
of Sri Lanka.
