Is the JVP's much talked of National Broad based Alliance, with the UNP , SLFP(M) and TNA ?
By Charles PereraThe tax bills were passed in the Parliament with a majority of 25. The Speaker is the final say in the matter of legality or the illegality of the vote in Parliament. He has given his verdict . Ranil Wickramasinghe, Sambanthan and Anura Dissanayake trio could scream their heads off, but it is now of no avail. Ranil Wickramasinhe has failed once again despite his Raja Yoga, Astrological planetary positions in his favour, and his public deliriums. JVP so far accepted as a potential political party of youthful politicians capable of forming a future socialist government, has failed the people and shown its inability to take mature political decisions. If JVP has to win back the confidence of the people, it should remove Anura Kumar Dissanayake, from the party as it appears that it was he who made a deal with Ranil Wickramasinghe to vote against the tax bills of the government. If the JVP has a semblance of socialism they should have remained neutral without voting against the government along with the UNP and TNA- the LTTE front Party. Socialism is a difficult path, one should not be fooled by the numbers attending a party meeting, as a sign of acceptance of the party by the people, and placing their confidence in it. Neither should they think that making forceful public speeches imitating Colvin to continued applause of the public is a display of true socialism. JVP has burnt the ladder of popularity with which they climbed to became the third political party of the country. If they continue to traverse this path they will soon be a rightist party , no different to UNP, CWC, SLMC or TNA. The "after budget" statement of Aruna Kumar Dissanayake is just an echo of his new political champion Ranil Wickramasinghe. The JVP's proposed broad based national front may not materialise as their joining up with the UNP, an TNA against the Socialist Government of the President Mahinda Rajapase has compromised their bona fides of socialist intentions. It is time that Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara give a second thought before sharing a political platform with JVP in future. One cannot understand the real intentions of the JVP, if they propose a future Socialist government, their sympathies should normally be with the socialist Government in place, not with a hybrid national congress of pro-western capitalists and " mongrels and political refugees", as they themselves called the SLFP(M) union. It is still not too late for the JVP to make an introspection of their actions and make amends by joining with the President Mahinda Rajapakse for the implementation of a socialist programme and criticise and reform the government from within. After all Mahinda Rajapakse has not gone against the people in presenting the tax bills. The taxes on portable telephones would not be a great burden on the larger majority of the people. JVP like UNP is determined to make governing difficult for the President, and is all out to pounce on the government to criticise its actions to put the people against it. JVP as well as the UNP is quite aware that Mahinda Rajapakse has won the hearts of the people, who has understood his sincere intention to end terrorism, to which he has given priority. Other progressive programmes have to wait until the objective on which he has set his mind is achieved. Speaking to an Indian journalist , the President Mahinda Rajapakse said, "'I recognise the legitimate historic grievances of our Tamil people. They are Sri Lankans: proud Sri Lankans. And any organised repression of the rights of any Sri Lankan is a blot on all Sri Lankans ". And he added , " I differ from my opponents who say peace at any price. I say peace, yes, but peace with honour and dignity. And the only question that is non-negotiable is a divided Sri Lanka." So what deters, the Sinhala, Tamils and Muslims of Sri Lanka , leaving politics and political leaders aside rallying round him, to give him courage and moral support. It is clear to all freedom loving people of Sri Lanka, that the intention of Mahinda Rajapakse and his bothers is not to leave any stone unturned to end terrorism in Sri Lanka. May the President and the present government remain long enough at least to achieve that much desired objective. |
