After Ranil Wickramasinghe, there is another contender for the Presidential Chair.

By Charles Perera

They are in a mighty hurry. They all want to be the President. Perhaps the Constitution should be changed to have a panel of five Presidents, so that every body could be made happy, that is if there are only five contenders. Problem is there seem to be more than five. Somawansa Amarasinghe seems to have high hopes. But one does not know who really leads JVP. There is Wimal Weerawansa, Anura Dissanayake, the two Trade Union Leaders, or Vijitha Herath . The last appears more suitable than the rest.

Amarasinghe had been speaking critically of the President Mahinda Rajapakse, as unsuitable to continue to be the President as he is not following the Mahinda Chintanya. Amarasinghe therefore, wants to put the country on to the correct path and avoid anarchy.

The talk about the formation of the Broad Front lead by the JVP had been going on for some time, but they do not seem to have made a significant head way towards its realisation. The people are also getting tired with Somawansa Amarasinghes assertion of giving the people a different government, because the people are happy with the government of Mahinda Rajapakse.

What government can give straight away to the people what they promise, specially when Sri Lanka has the terrorism that takes all its energy ? Getting rid of terrorism, if JVP does not know is the priority, and all the other matters should better be left for later. The country is nevertheless not at bankruptcy level, and therefore the people should give time to the government to attending to matters in an order of priority.

People elected Mahinda Rajapakse as the President, because they trust him to do what is good for the country, and that is just what he is doing , despite all the criticism and accusation of violation of human rights that is being levelled at him.

No government had done what Mahinda Rajapakse had done within an year and a half of his coming into power. It is easy for people to criticise, but it is the one in the place of authority who feels the heat, and see the difficulties. Therefore it is quite normal that the President takes his own time in solving the problems facing the country. The JVP instead of criticising and trying to set up another government, should have stayed with the President and given him a hand in the enormous work he had undertaken.

The JVP says that it helped Mahinda Rajapakse to be the President, and the JVP should also understand that the JVP’s popularity until recently was because of the support it gave to Mahinda Rajapakse. The left or Marxist politicians never seem to learn from the past. It is the same every where, be it in Sri Lanka, or even France. The left movement in France presumed that they will one day be able to form a government of their own. The Marxists parties are revolutionary, but they have opted now for parliamentary democracy.

But people still recognise them as revolutionary, and therefore prefer other Socialist parties with popular support. Only way a Marxist Party may see progress in the country the their way is by “infiltration” into a popular socialist party. The old left too realised it and supported SWRD and was prepared to work with him. DR.NMPerera’s mistake was not joining SWRD at that time, hoping to form a government of the LSSP as an alternative to SLFP or UNP. His joining Mrs. Bandaranaike, was a mistake, specially with Felix Bandaranaike in her cabinet.

Whatever, Somawansa Amarasinghe says the JVP with a broad front or no broad front will never be able to democratically form a government of their own. The only wise move for them is to move along with the President Mahinda Rajapakse.
