Mr. Lal Kantha should take up the case of the Unemployed Graduates, instead of seeking cheap political popularity.

By Charles Perera

Who is Lal Kantha trying to fool ? He speaks forcefully asking the government not to mix up the question of existence with the National Question, as every thing depends on giving salary increases to members of his Union. He leaves behind those who are asking for a means of an existence, in favour of those who are already existing, with a permanent job and an income.

Thousands of unemployed graduates have been making manifestations for the last several months, and neither Mr. Lal Kantha of JVP, nor the Government of Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse seems to pay much attention to the justifiable demand of employment by these young men and women. There are lot of possibilities according to media reports for employment of educated your, but the government seems to be incapable of taking decisive measures.

Mr.Lal Kantha is asking the government to give a favourable response for the demand of salary increases by the workers , by the 31s of January, failing which he threatens to declare an Island wide strike on the 2nd February. Mr.Lal Kantha asks that the workers who already have jobs , and thus a means of existence should be given salary increases for better living conditions, where as the unemployed Graduates who are asking for a means of existence, to make a start in life, are left out of his compassion.

Is it correct on the part of a Trade Unionists, and an elected Member of Parliament like Mr;Lal Kantha, to over look the suffering of the young undergraduates, most of them coming from poor families, who have made sacrifices hoping that success in their exams would provide them with at least a job, a mean s of living to help their parents and start a respectful life. In the circumstances, turning away from the needy, asking more benefits to the workers, Mr. Lal Kantha, is not doing his duty by the people who may have supported his election to Parliament. The young should be given a hand for tomorrow depends on them.

Mr. Lal Kantha is not really interested in the workers nor in the suffering of the people, his main interest is in seeking cheap political popularity. If Mr;Lal Kantha continues in this manner the JVP which is already losing its popularity will be despised by the people that matter for their political existence.
