JVP an Ally or Enemy in the Fight Against LTTE Terrorism ?

Sisira Pereira, Panadura

Nobody would dispute the fact that the JVP was instrumental in bringing Mahinda Rajapaksha Government into a reality. Had they not joined hands with MR against the traitorous UNP-NGO alliance at the last Presidential elections, Sri Lanka would have been partially divided by now and the jubilant LTTE would be “governing” massive parts of the country. Of course, the armed forces would not have gone on the offensive against any of the LTTE’s blatant violations of the so-called CFA, and would have ordered to remain a spineless body, and it would have had orders from the very top to bury their dead silently if the LTTE attacked somewhere; no retaliation, utter not so much as a word against the LTTE. In short, the LTTE would have simultaneously marked their most huge victory in their terrorist struggle spanning for more than two decades, had the UNP managed to seize power back then with the bogus CFA in place, LTTE-held territory demarcated and the LTTE-eyed SLMM guarding every little or massive secret of the LTTE.

All these changed with the establishment of the current political administration, which adopted a military vision and a mission to deal with the LTTE, fair and square. This MR government, which the JVP helped into power, has succeeded in doing what no other Sri Lankan government could even come close to on their own; weakening the LTTE and virtually handing them a swashbuckling blow at their own game. And today, the LTTE, the most ruthless and sophisticated terrorist organization the world has ever seen, is struggling to get back on their feet in all their fronts, political, military and finance. They have lost the entire East and parts in the North, their propaganda machinery is losing momentum, their military successes are something of the past, their military debacles are fast on the rise, their international procurement of illegal arms and military ware in shatters, their foreign assets frozen due to international ban, and they are losing support among their own people, once thought to be their primary strength.

The current leadership of the country had the correct mindset and the proper resources to expend on its journey to defeat the LTTE. It began with appointments of able human resources in crucial positions that is a must when the government is engaging a terrorist organization of LTTE’s caliber. It is not just Mahinda Rajapaksha who had been key to all these victories against the LTTE. It is also his crew who he has appointed in all the right places and delegated power to design, enact and sustain the on going military strategy to crush the LTTE in all its fronts. It is the best Hub of human resources that the country has ever seen for a long time that has proven its worth in managing the routing of the LTTE.

And, it is this hub of people, lead by the President himself, that has become the thorn in the sight of all LTTE sympathizers within Sri Lanka, as well as all over the world. It is this hub of people who are constantly targeted these days by the LTTE, UNP, pro-LTTE NGO’s, bogus Human Rights Organizations, sinister Diplomatic missions and the LTTE diaspora. They in unison want MR’s government toppled. It is stark clear that, in turn, they want to disintegrate this Hub of people, who have managed to give the highest morale to the armed forces, who are risking their own lives to pull off a concerted effort to dismantle the LTTE effectively to pave the way for the MR administration to go forward with a much needed political settlement for the decade long crisis.

Unpatriotic forces usually do that. Anybody would understand.

However, since of late, to the Nation’s misfortune, the one time strong ally of the government, JVP, too is targeting the MR administration with a mind to topple the government. They have made it public that it is their prime target of late! They did something to that effect so recently in the parliament joining hands with the UNP to make uproar against a few tax bills being passed. The UNP would have been elated to see that, would it not?

Unfortunately, is that what this country wants now? A change of administration? Is that what this Nation wants when its guardian angels are about blow the final death blow to the dying LTTE? Is it what this country wants now, a change of Military leadership who are doing a brilliant job in squaring up the ruthless LTTE? Is it not what the Nation does not want to see happen on the brink of a successful military suppression of the LTTE?

I fail to understand why the JVP is acting the goat in the pottery shop these days. On one hand, it showers the SL armed forces for what they deserve for taking on the LTTE so bravely and in a selfless way. They pioneer programs like the ‘Manel Mal’ to assist and encourage the armed forces personnel in their endeavour. They are there every time as the first political party to applaud the bravery of the 3-forces when they acquire successes. They give leadership to organizations like ‘National Movement Against Terrorism’. And they demand the government not to kow tow to malicious foreign forces and get on with annihilating the LTTE militarily.

And, then, when it comes to toppling the government, they have all the reasons to jump in the bandwagon!!

Who is the JVP mocking at? It is the innocent civilians of this country who wants to see the LTTE defeated and peace restored. They have lived more than two decades pushed to a corner by a poor economy, which has not been able to lift itself up from the shackles largely due to the LTTE terrorism in the country. Any layman understands that. There is no future for our economy as long as the LTTE threat is alive. Sri Lanka needs to finish the LTTE menace once and for all and pave the way for a peaceful society and revive the economy. And the MR government has managed to crush the LTTE as no previous government was even close to.

The JVP too tells the government to get on with the military operations.

And Whoa!!! The JVP all of a sudden feels the whopping burden felt by the people due to the sagging economy, and wants to topple the government. The UNP must have partied at the Cambridge Terrace hearing that. Should that toppling were to take place tomorrow, would the JVP get the power? Not in million years. And if that is not going to happen, who is going to take the country’s wheel? The UNP. And would their Hub be the same then? A big NO. Then would the current military thrust against the LTTE continue? Don’t kid me. If the government were to be brought down any moment now, the Hub would be dismantled too.And then would the JVP’s goal be achieved?

Only heaven knows, because, as a matter of fact, I for one fail to understand what the JVP’s true goal is nowadays.

It is true that the MR government is not doing brilliantly with respect to National economy. But what do you expect in times of a war against the LTTE? Have we not seen worst scenarios before, where the previous governments did not do well in that department and on top of that had no clue how to break open the LTTE too? Those governments never had the insight nor the political will and courage to call the LTTE a terrorist outfit that needs to be crushed militarily. They never gave the SL armed forces the full authority to plan and execute offensives against the LTTE with an aim of defeating it. Instead, all previous governments blundered in both departments. They mismanaged the Economy of the country and they mollycoddled the LTTE. The country saw no result, neither military nor economy wise. Therefore, we all were where we were when the MR administration took effect.

From that point onwards, the major obstacle that had plagued my country for almost 30 years is getting dealt with severely and it is getting done effectively. There is some more way to go. The country knows this. Its people know this.

Does the JVP know it?
