Monkey business in the parliament

Jay Deshabandu

The drama unfolds at the parliament with the select committee of the bundles of alleged scandals of leaders of our country in dealings with the terrorists outfit-the LTTE.

Such a drama at a high cost of public funds from the sweat of poor people of Sri-Lanka is unnecessary as it is clear that any genuine leader do his best to combat terrorism.

President Mahinda Rajapaksha and his brothers have already won hearts and minds of all Sri-Lankans who are capable of seeing the hard realities that threaten the sovereignty of the Sri-Lanka.

Of course no matter how the UNP and its leader Ranil Wickramasinghe put it, the cooperation of the Rajapaksha company is a real blessing for the ordinary Sri-Lankans. The country has achieved an improved economic development even with an internationalized unwanted war with the terrorists, it has ambitious massive development projects even in the newly liberated areas of East, and it has the strong and ambitious government that can stand and fight whatever comes in its way against the well intended government plans.

Surely, it is not a one man’s show as we have seen when J.R., Premadasa, Ranil or Chandrika ruled our country. The country was kept in the dark in matters important to territorial integrity of our land. The infamous, now defunct and oxygenated to the dying LTTE, the peace agreement was made secretly with the Prabahakaran and the Ranil Wickramasinghe. However, making a workable peace agreement is a good thing but the inventor of the agreement, Ranil, could not foresee what the terrorists could do with the contents of the agreement to get legitimacy and weapons for its terrorist’s activities and other agenda in the international arena. Now there is clearly no point of return in dealings with the terrorist, racist LTTE leader Prabahakarn who deserved to be served with justice for the war crimes, terrorism and child abuse in an international court.

In a country and a culture like ours, it is indeed necessary that we have a strong government for the economic and social development of Sri-Lanka.

It is in fact easy to see that if President Rajapakhsa did not utilize the skills of his brothers, but instead trusted other politicians to be on his side, the government would have already fallen, the terrorists would surely have gotten the grip, a weaker form of UNP government would emerge and then again that UNP government would topple by itself.

We inherit some, but many, corrupted politicians in Sri-Lanka who makes the career of a politician into a business venture. In such a country, of course the unity shown among the brothers of the president is a blessing to the country resulting in a stable government that can drive the country in a right path for the development.

Just consider the chaotic situation created by these infamous duo politicians who strangled the regular affairs of the country in to un-necessary, fabricated stories alleging the president of wrong doings with the LTTE. Debating about it would be nothing but a monkey business in the parliament wasting both time and money.

Who is effectively combating the terrorism now? Who is liberating the people of Sri-Lanka now? Definitely it is not with this selfishly motivated duo’s cooperation. Surely Mangala would have stayed with the government had he given his beloved ministerial post again with an opportunity to grab the power as prime minister of Sri-Lanka, and the rest of his allegations would be just history. Now he is crying as a child dreaming of a lost piece of chocolate.

If one is a UNP-Mangala supporter or not, I believe, it is the responsibility of every citizen to support the government at least in combating terrorism and in implementing a just political solution that embraces democracy for the legitimate grievances of our Tamil brothers and sisters.

There is still ample room for the Ranil-Mangala to support the government, do the right thing for the people at a time the terrorism has been combated a half way through.

Also, I believe that the government is not committed to crushing the LTTE as they are also our countrymen but it is committed literally to stop the terrorism and to come up with a political solution for all the miseries in the country.

To do just that it is necessary to destroy the military capabilities of the LTTE so that implementation of the political solution can take place in a democratic political environment.

Support for a United Sri-Lanka!
