The vote for the Budget was not a vote for the President, but for the country

By Charles S Perera

No one could disagree with Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, when he says that all those who voted against the Budget of 2008, were traitors of the cause of the people.

The country had been taken hostage by a ruthless group of rotten verminous terrorists for well over two decades. They had committed mass murders of innocent men, women and children, killed a bus load of monks, bombed a crowded bus of civilians, assassinated a President, two Ministers, many Tamil intellectuals, high ranking officers of the Security forces, and the list is without end.

They have desecrated the blessed land, the repository of the word of the Compassionate Buddha. They had smeared the precincts of the sacred Bodhi tree, with the blood of the innocent,. They had bombed the Sacred temple of the tooth. They have created communal hostility. They chased away the Muslims from their rightful homes for reasons of ethnic cleansing. They have desecrated the ruined archaeological sites venerated by the Buddhists.

The terrorist, have for over two decades, violated the human rights of the innocent Tamil population living in areas, which were due to an unfortunate CFA, called areas under the control of the terrorists. They did not allow these innocent Tamil people living in the so called areas under terrorist control to exercise their civil rights .

The Tamil people in the areas under their control, those of the Tamil diaspora abroad, and those living outside their areas of control, who are politically ambitious, were made prisoners of a sentimental racial concept of a homeland created by the terrorists, turning them into hostile racists against their own compatriots- the Sinhala.

For over two decades, these terrorists, with a trained force of armed men, women and children, with brain washed innocent children turned into human bombs, murdered, killed and assassinated with little or no opposition by the Sri Lanka Armed Forces who were confined to their barracks, who had forfeited their right to defend the people and the country by a meaningless CFA.

Finally with the election of Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse as the President of Sri Lanka, the tables were turned against terrorism. He came into office determined to eliminate terrorists and their campaign of terror. He set about this difficult task wisely leaving without interference, the defence of the country in the hands of responsible Commanders of the Security Forces. The security forces at the time had only out dated and ineffective arms and armaments. The Government under the President Mahinda Rajapakse modernised the army, in keeping with the terrorists who were already well equipped, with 12 large Ships at their command to transport illegally acquired heavy arms, ammunitions, communication transmission material, and even planes..

Of course, Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse –the President had a difficult task ahead. He had to at all cost eliminate terrorism before any progressive development work could be undertaken. He knew that doing that would bring him into conflict with the promises he had give to the people to give them better living condition, at a lower cost of living. But he knew that there were factors which are not within his control, and as such his primary effort to eliminate terrorism would, result in facing a dissatisfied population and a hostile political groups, not to speak of the non-cooperative (pro-terrorist) International Community.

He had, nevertheless, to go ahead with the immediate task of putting an end to terrorism. In the meantime the resourceful terrorists, were playing their last cards, putting the government and the people into greater difficulty. It became imperative that the Security forces should be

provided with military equipment appropriate for their operations against terrorism.

Therefore, even if it was against his wish, he had to find the money in his budget to equip the Security Forces, and curtail all the benefits he would have liked, to have offered to the people. However, he gave certain relief , that was of immediate necessity, and prepared a Budget which was primarily for the elimination of terrorism from Sri Lanka. It was a necessity after over two decades of suffering brought about by allowing the terrorists to continue their nefarious activities in the north-east. He took the plunge expecting the people to bear with him a little more until the coming of better days and presented his Budget in the Parliament.

It is a Budget of necessity. A Budget that would stop terrorism once and for all. A budget that promises happiness and prosperity in the future. The poor people, had to tighten their belt further. He was quite aware of it. But, the necessity had no alternative. He was sure if the people would bear with him, the over two decades of suffering could be put to an end.

That is why every patriot worthy of being so called should trust in the President, and rally round him. This may be the last chance we have( perhaps provided by our collective Kamma), to end terrorism in Sri Lanka.

The JVP has turned traitors to the country and the people, in voting against the Budget, with reactionaries, who had nurtured the terrorists.

It was not a vote for the President and the Government that was called for in asking to vote in favour of the Budget. But it was a vote for the country and the people. If Somawansa Amarsinghe and his JVPers disagreed on the budget, they should have abstained from voting. Instead they voted against the Budget with reactionaries the UNP and the TNA. They have done the worst and do not deserve the pardon of the people. They will be traitors of the country and people will remember their traitorous stand on the Budget of the President-the Budget to defend the country and the people.

Somawansa Amarasinghe, is not fit to lead a political party. He is a bitter man harbouring personal grudge, anger, and jealousy.. JVP is better off without him.
