Ranil Wickramasingha by calling Dussilayo to Buddhist monks, forfeits his right to be a Political Leader of Sri Lanka.By Charles PereraRanil Wickramasinghe should in his own interest take a rest from politics for a serious introspection. Lately he had been making far too many statements, neither in keeping with his political ambitions, nor even as an ordinary Sinhala Sri Lankan. Not only is his verbal conduct becoming injurious and abusive, but he also tends to infect those around him to be equally affected in their abusive verbiage. Lakshman Kiriella is almost mimicking his master, while Tissa Attanayaka uses the same language of the master not to be out done by the others. All in all the intolerable cacophony they all make disturbs the peaceful atmosphere accrued after freeing Toppiagala ! Ranil is trying hard to be a Buddhist externally, when he is not one internally. He seems to think that he could dupe the masses and his UNP supporters to believe that he is an honest and a capable leader by mixing with monks and becoming very ceremonial at religious precincts. But one can see all that sham is with an eye to fool the people. He cannot be a Buddhist because his whole make up is anti-Buddhist. He emits lobha, dosa and moha, through thought , word and action. Tanha dominates him, anger and hatred follow him like his shadow, he insults Buddhist Monks in public. How can he under these circumstances pretend to be a good Buddhist ? The biggest mistake Ranil Wickramasinghe made was to call the Buddhist monks the dusseela samagama. No Buddhist lay person has the right to call in public the Buddhist monks dusseelayo. For this is what he said by adding samagama at the end off dusseela. The lay people should be respectful towards a Buddhist Monk as long as he is in his yellow robe, no matter what he does. What a lay person can do is perhaps to bring the knowledge of the immorality of a Buddhist monk to the Maha Sangha, who would take appropriate action in terms of the Vinaya Rules. In ancient time the Vinaya Pitaka was not allowed to be read even by the monks before their higher ordination, let alone a lay person. Therefore, a lay person would not know that a monk has committed an offence under the Vinaya Rules. A Buddhist monk breaking the rules of discipline has to pay for it, either by being subjected to the appropriate punishment under the rules, or suffer through accumulation of unwholesome kamma. A monk who break the Vinaya Rules and accepts the respect of the laity and their offerings, will undergo great suffering during his very life time or in another life. It is therefore not for a lay person, even if he is the Head of State
to call a Buddhist monk a dussilaya. It is a great wrong
committed against the Maha Sangha, and therefore, Ranil Wickramasinghe
forfeits his right of political leadership in this country, the land
of Theravada Buddhism, where the Buddha, the teachings of the Buddha,
and the Maha Sangha are accepted as the Triple Gem. No amount of denials,
or explanations could absolve him from the wrong he has committed against
Buddhism, by his insulting Maha Sangha. If he has any sense of the wrong
committed by his insult to the Maha Sangha, he should resign from the
leadership of his Party. |
