ABDUCTIONS IN SRI LANKA - WHAT PUNISHMENT?ASOKA S.If the media reports are true that a person named Gajanayake of the SLAF was the kingpin of the recent abductions in SL the next logical question would be what is the appropriate punishment for such social renigrades. SL is battling the biggest battle of his modern history trying to eliminate the LTTE manace and at the same time avoiding the cost of the war trickling down to the everyday man's wallet. This is tough given the fact that SL is a poor country and our megre earnings are indeed needed to better the standard of living of the Lankans. Also GOSL is trying hard to win the hearts and minds of the Western Powers who do dictate to us to a great extent because SL depends on their aid. We simply cannot do without the aid to feed and cloth our people. Rightly or wrongly this is the fact and no amount of rheoteric or protests can change that. President Rajapaksha and his team is doing the only way forward with meglomaniac Prabhakaran which is to put him under military pressure; the only language he understands and is on a terminal path of self destruction. Any reversal of this will only allow the LTE is rethink and regroup. Then comes the abduction factor. All Lankans are well aware of the very dark days of abductuctions and beheddings of late 80's during the time another meglomaniac called Wijeweera was running amok. This no doubt was the darkest chapter of modern Lankan history which was the biggest insult bestowed upon this once very peaceful country of ours. The current spate of abductions brought Lanka into international direpute and the GOSL into major embarrasment at a time they need all the goodwill of the Western Powers and the allies. To the LTTE this was a gift to tarnish the GOSL image and to keep poisoning the West with their effective lying machine. In my judgment Lankan people do not deserve to go through the fears
of abductions as well as the embarrasment brought upon them by Gajanayaka
and his group. They should stand trial and if found guilty should be
sentenced to death. Yes death is cruel but think of the misery and agony
brought about by Gajanayaka to thousands of children and parents not
klnowing the fate of their loved ones. If found guilty Gajanayaka doen
not belong in the civilized world but a lifetime in the slammer or a
nose around his neck. This will also act as a potential deterent to
any future wrong doers.
