Ranil?s Milestones are LTTE Landmarks

Dilrook Kannangara

Ranil celebrates 30 years in politics on or around the Black July day. It is no coincident as coincidents do not happen in such frequency. It was the happiest day of his life when R Premadasa was killed by a LTTE bomb (whoever planned it); soon after the incident DB Wijetunga broke the good news that Ranil is going to be the next PM and if things go well, the future president. This was a landmark for the LTTE as it succeeded in killing for the first time, a president. By this time, allegedly the LTTE has also killed his other would-be opponent – Lalith.

Unfortunately, for Ranil, Gamini, Premachandra, etc. stormed into the UNP leadership. Ranil got married when the largest Naval vassal of the SLN at that time was sunk by the LTTE. Wedding bells turned jingle bells that Christmas for Ranil when in a landmark explosion (obviously it was so only for the terrorists), tigers managed to dictate who contest presidential elections in Sri Lanka and who don’t. It was a milestone for Ranil in his long march to setting up the record of becoming the longest standing Opposition Leader in Sri Lanka.

Then luck shone on his face again when a tiger suicide bomber almost killed the first woman president in its menu. Having obtained all benefits from Lucky Algama, Ranil let him go without a word of condemnation on the very same day. That day marked another big achievement for the LTTE when it attacked two election campaigns on the same night.

In 2001, Ranil started his long march to premiership alongside the LTTE bombardment of the airport. It was a milestone for both and both leveraged maximum positive political clout from it. Ranil became the PM again, an unforgettable day in his political life and an even more important day for the LTTE when its henchmen formed into a parliamentary group by the name TNA. Ranil’s ‘statesmanship’ was at peak when he signed the CFA in 2002 and so was Parabakaran’s. Both the Batalanda and Aranthalawa killers came to a pact to kill more in the name of peace. For the first time, the LTTE leader could make his statements over the national TV, a privilege denied even to the elected president at that time!

In 2004 the parliament was dissolved and Ranil was fast losing his support and so was the LTTE. While Ranil lost the electorate the LTTE lost Karuna. Both were weeping their losses. This was a sad milestone in both of their lives they wished never happened and marked the steady decline of their influence. More and more followed the defection trend and joined with the government from Ranil’s camp. Both Ranil and the LTTE condemned it calling it opportunistic.

Then came Ranil’s 58th birthday and a big leap forward for the tigers when they launched their first air ‘attack’. There were a series of tiger air attacks when Ranil was enjoying a period of ‘raja yoga’. His raja yoga eventually won him Mangala. He wedded Mangala on the day the Thoppigala liberation was officially announced. It was a new phase in Ranil’s political life and of course that of the LTTE as well.

Now both are planning to celebrate the Black July with a bang. The LTTE is determined to make it a memorable day for them when Ranil celebrates his 30th year in active politics. Will there be a tiger air show and a tiger gun salute in honour of this great political character? Well, Ranil expects it. It is worth the while to think over the actors behind the July 1983 events; it was indeed Parabakaran and Ranil's uncle; now they are together again to celebrate it!

The day Ranil becomes a father will coincidentally mark the birth of Tamil Elam. It would be the happiest day for both Ranil and the LTTE. This will also mark the silencing of their critics for good who called them highly incompetent and power-hungry.

Its a good thing that their dreams have now turned into nightmares as the Biblical verse goes, "One who swims in sin shall sink in sorrow".
