Mr. Lakshman Kiriella as a Parliamentarian should be more cautious when making allegations against the Defence Secretary.

By Charles Perera

Some members of the UNP leadership, including its leader seem to be talking through their hats. They all seem to clamour for the pound of flesh from Gotabhaya Rajapakse. Is it because he is a great hero having escaped from a claymore bomb, is all out to defeat terrorism and has almost succeeded in doing so ? It happened once before when under General Ratwatte the government forces were able to chase the terrorists in to the jungles from where they called for a cease fire. Just about then the PA government lost in the elections and Ranil Wickramasinghe became the Prime Minister, that changed the history of terrorism in Sri Lanka.

It is a great blessing to the country that the tables were changed at the last Presidential election and despite the different manoeuvres Mahinda Rajapakse was elected as the President of Sri Lanka ( If he had to pay Millions to become that as some people seem to claim , it is money well spent). The President was right to have asked Gotabhaya Rajapakse to come back to Sri Lanka as the Defence Secretary. He did not ,definitely come here to earn money, which he could have done in safety and comfort where he was. Having been appointed as the Defence Secretary he has taken the responsibility of the post, to defend Sri Lanka and its people from any attacks from terrorists or from wherever it comes. He had been doing that remarkably well. Defence secretary has the responsibility to defend the nation. Therefore, he takes whatever decisions he thinks are appropriate in the interest of the country and the people.

Evacuation of persons who had come from the East and North and taken residence in hotels and boarding houses, was a security measure in the wake of lorry loads of claymore bombs that were being transported to Colombo which the vigilant Security officers were able to detect in time. Mr.
Kiriella’s brain does not seem to function well enough to understand that the Defence Minister should take effective measures to avoid a disaster in Colombo, without fear or fervour. In that duty of his he cannot be diplomatic or human lest he fail in his responsibility that goes with the Office he holds. He may be criticised by politicians, religious leaders, or ordinary persons, but that should not ,deter him from accomplishing the task allotted to him in the best way possible.

That action of eviction of Tamil persons who had just arrived from North and East, has no relation to abduction to which Mr. Lakshman Kiriella refers.
It is people like Mr. Kiriella who should be taken to task, for taking cover
under his position as a Parliamentarian to make unwarranted criticism
and casting insinuations on the performance of the duties by a Government Official in the interest of the Country and its people.

Mr.Kiriella criticises the Mahinda Chintanaya and seem to take pleasure in the UN Security Council putting Sri Lanka alongside Sudan, Darfur and Somalia. Mr. Kiriella does not seem to understand that the situation with regard to the three countries referred to by him have no relevance whatsoever to what Sri Lanka is to-day.

Mr.Kiriella may have read that in UK too after arrest of a terrorist activist in London, many people have been taken for questioning and houses searched. That is normal procedure in the face of terrorism.
