UNICEF executives in their Colombo office had given bullet proof plated vehicles to the LTTE and a number of UNICEF vehicles were to be fitted with bullet proof plates on the directions of Jennifer Taylor, who, in March 2006, had employed a local firm at a cost 12,375 US Dollars, JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa told Parliament yesterday.

He said however only the vehicle in the possession of the UNICEF was fitted with the bullet proof plates while it was not clear how may other vehicles were fitted with such plates and where those vehicles had gone.

On an earlier occasion he had also pointed out that UNICEF had given a vehicle to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, he said.

A serious question has arisen over how and why the UNICEF had given an order to fix bullet proof plates on a number of vehicles, when it uses only a Land Cruiser vehicle. It would be natural to surmise that UNICEF had given those other vehicles to the LTTE, Weerawansa said.

"Representatives of the UN agencies in Colombo are trying to reach us about human rights but their conduct is far from being neutral. They must be believing that we are an obscure nation of tribal people in some dark corner of Africa but it was time that patriotic people of this country united to teach these UN agents that their questionable activities cannot be condoned. The JVP has to ask the Foreign Ministry why it is still in slumber when swift and prompt action had to be taken against UNICEF officials who had violated the trust placed in them," he said.
