Dear Members/Wellwishers,
SLUNA's HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE
PROJECTS 2007-2008
We have pleasure in informing you that we have been able to carry
out the following Humanitarian
Assistance Projects with your support, to help the needy in our
motherland:
1. Supply of Mosquito Nets to poor families in Omanthai in liaison
with the SLA
This project was led by our Treasurer Meneka Karunanayake, which
was successfully completed
in January 2008. The mosquito nets were requested by the Sri Lanka
Army for distribution to
needy families in OMANTHAI, due to the prevalence of mosquitoes
and a high incidence of malaria
especially among children in the resident population. The attached
pictures gives a glimpse of the
delivery aspects where our project coordinator Meneka and her family
and actual recipients of the
mosquito nets are featured.
2. Provision of School Supplies to Children in the New Primary
School in Shanthimale, EP
We undertook to assist the Thawalama Development Foundation in providing
school supplies to the
children in the New Primary School established in Shanthimale, in
the newly liberated area of the
Eastern Province at the request of the Special Task Force. We contributed
$500.00 (Rs.51,000.00)
which represented approximately two-thirds of the total cost of
the school supplies which had been
distributed to the children towards the latter part of 2007, who
now had opportunities for schooling
following the eviction of the LTTE terrorists from the region. We
were told that the children and their
parents were moved to tears on receipt of this simple gift, in which
we too participated. (No pictures
are available at present. Shall request Lt. Col. Anil Amarasekera
of Thawalama DF to kindly
furnish us with a few pictures for our record.)
3. Grant of $250.00 to SUCCESS COLOMBO for carrying out Medical
Clinics and other Services
Our grant of $250.00 (Rs. 25,000.00) was personally delivered to
Dr. Anula Wijesundera, President of SUCCESS COLOMBO at the Medical
Clinic carried out in Sinhapura, close to Welikanda on December
16, 2007, by SLUNA's President who participated in the program.
4. Supply of Equipment/Accessories to the Anuradhapura Teaching
Hospital, Surgical Division
This project was undertaken with the help of Dr. Prasanna Gunasena,
Consultant Neuro Surgeon attached to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital,
and spread over several months in 2007 and concluded in the month
of January 2008. We selected this hospital in Anuradhapura as most
of the injured civilians and security forces personnel were rushed
to this location for urgent treatment, owing to injuries suffered
due to the ongoing conflict to rid the country of the menace of
LTTE terrorism. The nine surgeons at the hospital have been performing
round the clock and doing their utmost to save the lives of the
injured brought from places as far away as Mannar, Kebithigollewa,
etc. ( No pictures are available at the present time.
