CONDEMNING THE KATUBEDDE KILLING OF CIVILIANS PRESIDENT MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA SAYS IT SHOWS TRUE NATURE OF LTTEBy Walter JayawardhanaPresident Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka said the continued targeting
of civilians by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) demonstrated
the groups true nature as terrorists, issuing a statement in the
immediate after math of exploding a claymore bomb blamed on the group
targeting a crowded civilian bus killing 20 passengers and injuring
60 others. The continued targeting of innocent civilians by the LTTE must
earn the outrage and opprobrium of all civilized societies, who can
now see the reality of the LTTEs unvarying commitment to violence
and terror to achieve its narrow objectives the president said. The explosion, the latest of a series of bomb blasts , targeting civilians
and blamed on the Tamil Tigers occurred June 6 in a densely populated
suburb of the capital city of Colombo, at Katubedde close to the island
nations premier university of technology. Extending the his sympathies to the kith and kin of the deceased and
offering the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem for a speedy recovery
for the injured the President said, In the past weeks alert members
of the public have shown commendable courage and responsibility in spotting
bombs in vehicles and public places, helping to seize hidden explosives,
and arrest persons believed to be associated with the LTTE's programme
of terror. "This once again brings into focus the continuing battle Sri Lanka
faces with the forces of terror in our efforts to safeguard democracy
and civilized life. |
