22 ARROGANT MEN FROM INDIA AND AUSTRALIABy M D P DISSANAYAKE
It was interesting listening to ABC talk back shows during last week. Some Indians have said in radio talk back shows, that there is nothing wrong in calling Andrew Symonds a "Monkey'. In fact they says Harbajan Singh has called AS a "Big Monkey", because in India, a Monkey called Hanumantha is a God, so Andrew is not an average God, but a Big God! One would expect the players from the sub-continent would display a sportsmanship, based on our cultural heritage. Aussies do not have a cultural background, so to speak, but they are kind, compassionate people, with the exception of 11 cricketers. Indians gave a hard time to Aussie players during their recent visit
to India. We all knew when Indians come here to play, that they will
get an equal response. Just imagine, if last year's World Cup final
was played between India and Australia, and then Adam the Gilcrest played
a massive innings, hiding a Squash Ball in his hand, there would have
been World War III. Harbajan Singh's 3 match suspension, in my opinion is justifiable. There should be no two sets of rules for India and rest of the World. Similary, Andrew Symonds should have walked-out when he knew he 'knicked" the ball, instead of playing continuously and scoring a century. Andrew was made the Man of the Match as well. On several occasions, Sri Lankan players leave the field, if they knew they were "Out" without necessarily waiting for the Umpires decision. No doubt, Sri Lanka was awarded the Trophy for the Best Team that played
Cricket in the "Spirit of the Game" by the ICC in 2007. This
Award was given very little publicity in Australia. |
