MDMKS VAIKO APPEALS TO THE EUROPEAN UNION TO SAVE THE LTTE TO PREVENT AN ANCIENT RACE BEING WIPED OUTBy Walter JayawardhanaMarumalarchi Dravida Munnetra kazagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko appealed
to the European Union and said they must bring pressure on the Sri Lanka
government to stop the military offensive against Velupillai Prabhakaran
led Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Vaikos appeal came after the LTTEs political head Nadesan
made a similar appeal to Norway and its International Minister Eric
Solheim to intervene in the situation and bring a stop to the war few
days ago. Although the LTTE is banned in India Vaiko led MDMK, an extremist party
has been carrying on a relentless campaign to save the tottering Tamil
groups base in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. But the LTTE, one of the most repressive Fascist regimes in the world
recruits children as soldiers disregarding constant protests by the
UNICEF and the United Nations. It has also become a major reasons for
the Tamils to flee away from the area. Vaiko also did not mention that 54 per cent of the Sri lanka Tamils
live outside he LTTE run Wanni area in Sri Lanka having fled away from
the area, when he was speaking at this conference organized by the Art
of Living Foundation of the Indian Spiritual Guru Sri Ravi Shankar in
Oslo. Vaikos demand was not very different from that of the LTTE.
He said , that unless Tamils were accepted as a "separate nation"
and their inhabited zones were regarded as their "traditional homelands,
no negotiation would lead to a solution. He still maintained the position
taken by the LTTE for a separate state in Sri Lanka. Other political leaders like Subramaniam Swamy have accused parties
like MDMK and PMK of carrying out with funds supplied by the LTTE. Meanwhile UNPs Jayalath Jayawardenena speaking at the seminar said a ceasefire between the warring parties should be organized. He did not say whether he was expressing his private opinion or the opinion of his party at the seminar. (EOM)
