RULING CONGRESS PARTY IN NEW DELHI REJECTS KARUNANIDHI’S REQUEST TO IMPOSE CEASEFIRE ON SRILANKA

By Walter Jayawardhana

Rejecting the request of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi to impose a ceasefire on the neighboring island nation of Sri Lanka New Delhi’s ruling Congress Party said India cannot impose her power beyond her borders on other sovereign nations.

On the previous day, in a political step that virtually means another lease of political life for the main suspects of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi-namely Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and his intelligence chief Pottu Amman, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Muthuvel Karunanidhi announced that all Members of parliament of Tamil Nadu should resign if New Delhi would not impose a ceasefire in the military conflict in Sri Lanka within two weeks. Prabhakaran is trapped in a bunker now and surrounded by Sri Lankan security forces.
“"Those who make demands about other sovereign countries should know that India's sovereignty runs through the boundaries of India," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

Singhvi said the sovereignty of other nations cannot be interfered with by the government of India as requested by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Speaking over Times Now TV channel Singhvi said, "Those who make demands about other sovereign countries should know that India's sovereignty runs through the boundaries of India…. The parties should also understand that you are not dealing with a part of India but a sovereign nation.”

Trying to play the threat by the Chief Minister down the ruling Congress Party spokesman,Manish Tewari said that it was not a threat by Karunanidhi but it was a a concern for the civilians who are trapped in the conflict.

The Sri Lanka security forces opened corridors for the civilians to escape from the war ravaged kilinochchi but both the government and humanitarian organizations have complained that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have blocked their movement to use them as a human shield.
Karunanidhi led DMK and its smaller allies in the Tamil Nadu Assembley with the Tamil Nadu Congress and the two Communist Parties held a joint meeting to discuss the Sri Lanka situation and Karunanidhi issued a statement that they have decided to resign from their posts of members of parliament after two weeks of talks if the Indian government cannot impose a ceasefire in the Sri Lankan war.

But not giving two weeks for any negotiations Karunanidhi’s own daughter kanimozhi contrariy to the declared agreement at the joint meeting of the DMK resigned her Rajya Sabha (Upper House) seat before 24 hours.

Kanimozhi , is alleged to be the link between the LTTE and the DMK and certain Indian politicians have alleged that she is on the payroll of the LTTE to influence pro-LTTE activities concerning Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Pattali makkal katchi (PMK) , an ally of the DMK , immediately after the joint party meeting presided over by the Chief Minister addressing a public meeting hailed the decision of the party leaders meeting to resign and said their party is not interested in anything else but separation of Sri Lanka. Ramdoss reiterating his party’s stand, said Tamil Eelam was the only solution and his party was articulating this since its inception.

G.K. Mani, PMK president, speaking at the same meeting at T.Nagar said his party would work hard until Tamil Eelam was created, carving it out from Sri Lanka.
