TAMIL TIGERS DETERMINATION TO FORM A SEPARATE STATE FOR ALL TAMILS THREATENS SOVEREIGNTY AND INTERGRITY OF INDIABy Walter JayawardhanaIndias Home Ministry statement banning the Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as an unlawful association for the next two years
said the groups intention of forming a separate state for all
Tamils threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.
The announcement issued as a release by the ministry said, the LTTE,
an association based in Sri Lanka, has sympathisers, supporters and
agents on Indian soil. The release further said the militant outfit an extremely potent,
most lethal and well organised terrorist force in Sri Lanka and has
strong connections in Tamil Nadu and certain other pockets of southern
India. The release also charged that that the group will use Tamil Nadu as
a base for its smuggling activities of essential items like drugs ,
petrol and diesel . The LTTE will remain, a strong terrorist movement and stimulate
the secessionist sentiment to enhance the support base of the LTTE in
Tamil Nadu as long as Sri Lanka continues to remain in a state of ethnic
strife, torn by the demand for Tamil Eelam which finds strong echo in
Tamil Nadu due to the linguistic, cultural, ethnic and historical affinity
between the Sri Lankan Tamils and the Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka,
the release further said. Despite its proscription in India, rabble rousing politicians like
Vaiko, Nedumaran and Ramdos support it covertly as well as overtly.
Since former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by
a LTTE suicide bomber in 1991 at Siriperumbudur , a suburb of Chennai,
the outfit became an unlawful association. The LTTE is also a banned
terrorist organization in USA, Uk and Canada and other Asian country
like malaysia. An earlier item written by this correspondent inadvertently said the
outfit has been banned only for one year instead of the next two years.
