Pillaiyan showing more political maturity proposes an alternative, while the irresponsible Muslim Politicians ask for the "pound of flesh ".

By Charles.S.Perera

The Muslim politicians demanding the post of the Chief Minister of EPC, brings to mind the Shylock of the Shakespear's Merchant of Venice. They want their pound of flesh at any cost no less, no more. It is a regrettable show of a complete lack of a sense of patriotism. It matters less to them that terrorism was caused by a mislead group of Tamil youth, and the Karuna group contributed to wrench away the East from the terrorist grip. Many Tamil youths of Pillaiyan group died in the battle to win the East, to give freedom to the Muslim, Tamil and Sinhala Communities.

No doubt the Muslims suffered under the brutality of the Terrorists, but none of the Muslim politicians claiming a right to the post of Chief Minister was in the fore front of the battle for the East. While Pillaiyan was hiding to save his life living in the jungle, without a fixed aboard, the Muslim politicians were living in clover, protected by security provided by the government. Now that the dangers seem to be over in the East, they come to share the spoils of the war, like vultures pecking at a carcass to pick up left over pieces of flesh, fighting among themselves.

It is time that the Muslim Politicians grow up, leaving their shameless search for benefits for themselves, and be generous towards others. The Tamils of the East lived miserably under the control of the terrorists, suffering in many ways. Their children were kidnapped, the older people were forced to take up arms. They were tortured, and the human rights- the International Community is talking so much about, were denied to the Tamil people by the terrorist who treated them like slaves.

The Muslim politicians claim the post of the Chief Minister, stating they have political experience. But they should be ashamed of their political experience , when they do not seem to understanding what is correct, and what is wrong in a situation where Sri Lanka begins to over- power the terrorists, and seeking ways to create an atmosphere of unity among the divided communities. It has to be understood that what is needed today is not seeking prestige and political positions, but showing generosity and find a means to bring about unity among the different communities that make up the Sri Lanka Nation.

The Muslim politicians blinded by the search for prestige, is acting without responsibility, and without any sense of patriotism.

In that respect Pillaiyan shows more political maturity in proposing an alternative to overcome the difficult situation created by the Muslim politicians, in the search for a Chief Minister to the EPC. Pillaiyan is not seeking self aggrandisement or prestige, which is seen in his declaration that if his proposal is unacceptable, he would resign from the Provincial Council membership, along with his six comrades, and will have nothing more to do with the Provincial Council.

That is a lesson for Muslim politicians who are bragging about their experience and qualifications, and falling over each other to grab the big pieces remaining to be distributed.
