Shed Extremist & Selfish Politics & Uphold International Law

Dear Sir:

Re: Shed Extremist & Selfish Politics & Uphold International Law January 17,2008

Having just read your media release of January 17,2008, your organization once again while shedding crocodile tears for the innocent civilians killed by the LTTE seems to use the occasion for your own brand of "selfish politics". To satisfy your foreign donors whose agenda you have to follow to keep your funding intact, you refer to the "current phase" of the conflict leading to atrocities against the civilian population clearly ignoring that in ALL phases of the conflict the LTTE has committed atrocities against civilians. It has never been your stance to condemn the LTTE for these atrocities.

As for "upholding international law" when has your organization called on the LTTE to uphold any law? Where was the international community calling for "international law" when the LTTE continually attacked and terrorised civilians in numbers to numerous to list? As for Louise Arbour, her statement ignores the constant failure of the LTTE to uphold any law and that the LTTE has ignored all that she claims needs to be done i.e; arbitrary deprivation of life, arbitrary detention, torture, deployment of child soldiers etc. Why was Louise Arbour silent when the LTTE was violating the CFA thousands of times killing civilians even the Foreign Minister? It is obvious that she has not even a vague knowledge of the CFA and the fact that it was not only illegal but that the LTTE "violated" it from the outset and considered it "defunct" long before the government gave notice of it's abrogation. The same applies to the National Peace Council and while Ms. Arbour can be excused, your organization operating from Sri Lanka has no such excuse except that it is biased against the government and people of Sri Lanka at the behest of foreign donors. As for holding violators accountable under international law the question she has not answered is why the LTTE leaders in the west are operating with her knowledge, with the knowledge of the governments of the countries they are living in most of which countries have listed the LTTE as a terrorist organisation and the enforcers of so-called international law are doing nothing to apprehend them and hold them accountable. In this regard both Ms. Arbour and your organization seem to have the same form of amnesia and bias.

Organizations such as UNICEF and UNESCO have been recently exposed as being blatantly biased. I refer to the actions of UNICEF personnel joining in demonstrations against the GOSL in clear contravention of their role as well as the biased statement of the director of UNESCO when the Tiger radio station was bombed. These organisations have clearly demonstrated that they are staffed by personnel who are supportive of the LTTE and Ms. Arbour and you who bemoan the abrogation of the ceasefire also seem to want it to continue so that the LTTE can continue to bomb, massacre etc. protected by an illegal agreement. In this backdrop it is imperative that the government maintain it's stand and resists UN field monitors and closely scrutinize the track record of any civil monitoring organizations as so far their records are, to say the least, suspect.

It is correct to call on the political parties to shed their selfish, extremist policies and work for the good of Sri Lanka. The same would apply to the National Peace Council and other like organizations who so far have had a dubious track record in their attitudes and actions.

Yours truly,
