TAMIL DENIED ASYLUM CANNOT BE DEPORTED TO SRI LANKA DUE TO A VERDICT BY THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTSBy Walter JayawardhanaThe British authorities are in a quandary after a verdict by the European
Court of Human Rights that a Tamil man denied asylum in the United kingdom
cannot be sent back to his native Sri Lanka. The verdict given over a 33 year old Sri Lankan Tamil by the European
Court says the man who came to Britain in 1999 and sought asylum and
denied the status, cannot be deported to Sri Lanka since he feared ill
treatment by Sri Lankan authorities if he returned. The European human rights court said that it had received appeals against
342 other similar cases and asked the British authorities to suspend
the deportations pending rulings in the other cases. The main case in question refers to the Tamil man who had been arrested
six times during seven years and had been released every time he was
arrested without being charged. He said once during these seven years
he had been beaten by police batons and had scars on his legs. All arrests
had been in connections with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)
the court was told. The court said the man was released on the strength of a document by his father and the authorities would have a record of him.
