IN AN OBVIOUS REFERENCE TO SAMARAWEERA ARMY COMMANDER SAYS THOSE WHO BELITTLE ARMY IS AN INSULT TO THE NATIONBy Walter JayawardhanaSri Lanka Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka , in an obvious reference to an Opposition political leader who said in parliament that the war is a wastage of money of the state coffers charged the politicians who are belittling the achievements of the soldiers is an insult to the whole nation. Fonseka was being interviewed by by the Thulawa political program of the Independent Television Network (ITN) in Colombo. Calling such statements made without evaluating the great achievements by the soldiers could only be made by a fool the army commander said, even if the country kept the army to protect the people from terrorism without the war they would spend the same amount of money to feed and and maintain the army. Opposition political leader Mangala Samaraweera said in parliament that the achievement of the army was only an illusion and for an illusion the country was spending vast amount of money. Samaraweera said in parliament that the country had spent a vast amount of money for war for thirty years in vain. Mangala Samaraweera , leads a small political group which broke away from the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party and which is in coalition with the opposition United National party which entered into a ceasefire agreement with the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) , that had to be dropped mainly due to the hundreds of violations committed by the rebel group. He belongs to a one-mp political group in the parliament. United National Party leader Ranil wickramesinghe has also attacked the army when the LTTE lost its Thoppigala garrison calling the area only a jungle in the Eastern Province. The security forces have capured LTTEs Western coast supply point Pooneryn and the main route running acroos Wannini, the A9 and now cornered them in Kilinochi and Multivu jungles. Lt. General Sarath Fonseka in his Thulawa interview further said , The Army needs to buy weapons to eliminate the terrorists. It is foolish to make such calculations. It is a picture created by a fool who cannot understand the reality. There are certain armies in the world that have not fought for even 10 years and not killed a single terrorist. Armies do not earn any income. It is improper for a politician or an intellectual to make misleading statements due to their fluency in English. Results of the achievements should be taken into consideration. The Army commander said some politicians make such statements thinking
the ordinary civilians are fools. But they cannot be misled , he opined.
