Sri Lanka and Tamilnadu PoliticsMario Perera writing from New DelhiOn the 23rd October I heard news on Sri Lanka diffused through all
the television channels here. The gist of the news was that: Vaiko, the
die-hard pro LTTE campaigner had been placed in judicial custody further
to his inflammatory pro LTTE rhetoric. He had said that should the Central
Government continue to supply arms and radar to the Sri Lankan army,
he would ensure that weopans be handed over the the LTTE. Jayalalitha came on TV too voicing her condemnation of the LTTE. She
described how she alerted successive Governments to the LTTE danger
and finally was instrumental in procuring the ban on the terrorist outfit
She also criticized Priyanka Gandhi for visiting the woman convict in
the Rajiv Gandhi assassination in her prison cell. The LTTE has placed numerous CDs on the Tamilnad markets purporting
to deict army atrocities against the tamil population of the north,
and aso in praise of its own fighters. The core of Vaiko's rhetoric is what he describes as the genocide of
the Tamils by the Sri Lankan army. Several Sri Lankan tamil politicians
also came over TV voicing the same condemnation. One said: "No
constitutionally elected goverment bombs its own population" These
MP's intend pursuing their anti Sri Lanka propaganda in the northern
parts of India, they said. As for the pro LTTE lobby in Tamilnad, they have done hunger strikes
and now intend forming what they call "a chain of human solidarity"around
the tamils of Sri Lanka. They are also organising rallies and marches.
The Tamilnad film industry is joining in as well. The TV channels add that all this is happening at a moment when the
Sri Lankan army is closing in on Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu. The incident of stones being pelted and some damage caused to the SL
High Commission in Chennai was also repeatedy highlighted. The Sri Lanka
conflict is expected to have some repercussion on the coming Indian
elections. Today, the 24th the TV voiced the opposition to the pro LTTE lobbiues.
Janatha Party leader Dr.Subramaniam Swamy's house in Madurai was severely
damaged by pro LTTE groups. Dr.Swamy warned that what was taking place
in the guise of pro Tamil support was in reality a secessionist agenda
of Karunanidi, Vaiko and allies. He declared that these men are being
maintained through LTTE funds, hence their desperate attempts to keep
the LTTE alive and kicking. He warned the Central Government of the
secessionist movement of Tamilnad led by these political stooges of
the LTTE, the murderers of Rajiv Gandhi. He stated that crushing the
LTTE was the only solution to to impede ths secessionist ambitions of
these pro LTTE groups |
