"Slap In The Face For Sri Lanka" Or One, More Deserving Of Indiscriminate Journalism Intended To Discredit The Government. In retrospect By Sarath Kumar - For LankaWebMay24th 2008 The following item "A Well Deserved Slap For Sri Lanka" by Ms.Frederika Jansz features writer for a local National daily, deems identification as one which is captioned contentiously by the writer, with a reasonable reputation for dabbling in controversy where conversely it is the writer herself who probably deserves a slap in the face and the proverbial application of a stitch in time which would save the reputation of a better deserving Nation which is what this response is all about! Also, the journalist whom she is alluding to Mr Keith Noyahr who was recently savaged by unknown thugs is hardly a victim of Government mendacity as suggested by her if the incident is viewed rationally and objectively although he too has been a controversial writer who has needled many patriotic sources within the Nation and should have been taken to task through legal means long ago rather rather than someone or some persons resorting to indiscriminate and meaningless violence which has transformed him into a veritable martyr! Both these individuals truly belong to the enemy within ( and there are a few others too!) that create problems for the Government and its relentless march to eliminate the Tamil tiger terrorists. They get away with their objectionable rhetoric under the mantle of the freedom of the press and need to be cautioned and reminded of their entitlements which do not permit libellous or slanderous statement which certail gullible individuals lap up as gospel.Particularly when they sound tamil Tiger Friendly! When journalist Frederica Jansz suggests that "While Sri Lankas Armed Forces battle Tamil Tiger rebels in the north, sections of the countrys media are embroiled in a war of a different kind a fight to pursue their mission as journalists under a mantle of death threats" she is making a totally misleading statement which inalienably points fingers at the Government of Sri Lanka in a probable ploy intended to cover up for her own sins of ommision alongside those of similar ilk and are not welcome in the climate of Sri Lanka today which leans strongly towards National pride and patriotism rather than the anarchy and civil insurrection promulgated by the criminalities of the LTTE! and propagated by self opinionated journalists whether inadvertently or not. The international community should be applauded - not for "having given Sri Lanka the resounding slap it deserves for its continuing disregard of human rights" which is more a misconception, a fallacy and a misrepresentation of facts based on myopic interpretation. The IC needs to be applauded for having given Sri Lanka 100 out of 192 votes at the UNHRC elections ( technically a majority)and that Sri Lanka was pre-empted from a seat, a mere statistical end result of derriere licking of a few high faluting names by objectionable consorts who arent even recognized in true perspective by some of the superpowers who at times act unilaterally in the basis of the insignificance of the UNHRC. Towards the strength of this argument one only needs to look at what transpired prior to the US led invasion of Iran and Afghanistan as well as how some of the notorious violaters of human rights somehow crimped or 'sneak secured' a seat in the council and of no consequence to the reality that Sri Lanka has greater integrity towards maintaining human rights than some nations that were elected making this election somewhat of a joke or a means towards pre-empting or curtailing Foreign Aid To Sri Lanka as some believe! The abduction and assault of a senior and respected journalist in the country, Defence Columnist and Associate Editor of The Nation, Keith Noyahr, appears to bear all the hallmarks of mendacious Opponents of the State stamped all over it in connivance with the Tamil Tiger terrorists if one were to join in the guessing games of Frederika Jansz realistically albeit paradoxically and not a Sri Lankan response to being voted out of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which the writer mistakenly seems to be convinced about. If she had the perception necessary towards correct interpretation, the prima facie conclusion she would have come to would be the conflict of interest it would involve the GOSL in, to resort to such a lowering of its ethics and guard as well as a contravention of protocols appropriate to its status! That Keith Noyahrs shocking abduction and assault took place a mere 24 hours after Sri Lanka was beaten to the UNHRC seat by Pakistan is purely circumstantial unless so planned by its perpetrators to falsely implicate the GOSL and truly the whole disgusting and ugly incident once again smacks of underhand compliance attibutable to the enemies of the State. That Keith Noyahr has in recent weeks, in his defence column, been critical of the Sri Lanka Army and its Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka is something he may have been aware of as loaded with liabilities that could provoke heavy reprisals perhaps through a dignified legislative means from the Governmrnt far removed from physical assault which is more attributable logically to National fervour and zealotry uncouth as it may seem or else orchestrated to implicate the Government!. Nonetheless he appears to have taken a gamble which has had unfortunate reprisals irrespective of the means as there is a degree of treason involved in rhetoric against a Ruling Administration which has international approval and a mandate from the Nation to conduct operations intended to rid the Nation of its terrorist source regardless of the bleatings, accusations and cries of foul play by anti Government journalists whose finger pointing often has more speculation in its flavour rather than any tangible proof of Government involvement where a degree of tolerance however needs to be added in favour of how lawbreakers are dealt with as Sri Lanka, one must realise is still to a greater degree under threat of anarchy and the scourge of nation destructive terrorism. In this respect, items such as this which invariably shows a salient
intent to discredit the Government of Sri Lanka in the eyes of the world
albeit through souped up statistics, incidents and laments which could
have been far worse had the Prevention of Terrorism Act as well as either
a Curfew or State of Emergency been in full effect which would have
reduced the non - Lankan friendly United Nation Human Rights Council
's cognizance to zero visibility and circumspect speculation and the
false clarions of foul play accessible perhaps to a few who might stand
to benefit from them for all the wrong reasons! |
