The Fate of a Great Soldier

Janaka Yagirala

A few additions to the exceptional article by Dilrook Kannangara on Gen. Janaka Perera (June 26, 2008). First of all, well done Dilrook! Lets us also remember Gen. Parami Kulathunga, who was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber two years ago.

There are those who can say people have the democratic right to choose their political party. However, in SL its different. In the US, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans will change the US policy on Iran or Cuba. Similarly in India, neither the BJP or the Congress Party will embrace their hostile neighbor Pakistan.

In SL, we have two categories of polarized political parties, parties for traitors and parties for patriots (there is hardly a gray area!). The UNP is none other than the epitome of political treachery, shortsightedness and eunachism who have an agenda which is to appease the LTTE band of butchers and neo-colonial masters.

It was really saddened to receive an email from a distant relative of mine living abroad. It was on a statement made by Gen. Janaka Perera, stating that he would use his leadership skills to win the provincial election. Even more saddening was that it appeared on pro LTTE Tamilnet (on June 25).

Is this the hero who valiantly led battles against the LTTE? Is this the hero who led the SLA to the decisive victory in Jaffna in 2000 during the LTTE onslaught that cost us the strategic Elephant Pass Camp? Well that great soldier died the day he joined the traitorous UNP. He is now reborn as a traitor.

Lets not forget Lucky Algama who despite being instrumental in clearing the eastern province, joined the UNP and had an alleged involvement in the traitorous withdrawal of troops form Oththanthudava (Oddusudan). His fate was appropriately mentioned in Dilrook's article. Lets just hope that the traitor Janaka Perera will not use his influence to do something similar and reverse the current military victories. The defense ministry did the right thing by barring him from entering military camps.

There is one thing left for all patriots of SL to do. Let the traitor JP be remembered the same way we remember Don Juan Dharmapala, Ehelepola, Molligoda and Ekneligoda.
