An idea for the Liberal Party in Canada

Sir:

If the Liberal Party is searching for new ideas to rejuvenate itself, then permit me to provide them with one such idea to help stop their polarizing the two major Sri Lankan-Canadian communities, the Sinhalese and the Tamils.

I suggest that they keep away from Sri Lankan ethnic politics and direct their energies elsewhere. When Bob Rae put out a ‘Statement on the Sri Lankan Situation’ during the last federal election campaign, no doubt to win the GTA Tamil votes, we Sinhalese spear headed a campaign right away across Canada asking all the non-Tamil Sri Lankan-Canadians not to vote for the Liberals.

Liberals might as well accept the fact that they have absolutely no business to comment on Sri Lankan politics, having abdicated the Lester Pearsonian crown as an International Peace negotiator when they decided to let the Tamil Diaspora collect two million dollars a month for 13 long years to stuff the Tamil Tiger war chest to buy weapons for their war with the democratically elected government, and also not banning the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist organization when 31 other countries had done so.

Perhaps, my suggestion is worth a hearing during the Liberal Party’s planning sessions to rejuvenate their flagging popularity. Asoka Weerasinghe
