Yahoo Report On The Latest Terrorist Attack In Sri Lanka Put In Proper Perspective

Sharpshooting By Marksman SunnyFor LankaWeb

April 27th 2008

When correspondent Amal Jayasinghe of Yahoo News suggests in a somewhat unclassified report that the "Tiger rebels used aircraft on Sunday to bomb military targets in Sri Lanka, dealing a psychological blow to the Sri Lankan security forces, as the two sides fought heavy ground battles according to defence sources there seems to be a delusionary touch to Mr Jayasinghe's reasoning as well as reporting which appears a tad myopic or perhaps laced in bias as the mitigating factor.

There seems also a burning need to disillission the objectives of this very poor response to a major incident in the annals of Sri Lanka's war against the Tamil Tiger terrorists and a few facts set right as opposed to any distorsions this item might create in the minds of the less discerning international reader as this news item seems to have been put together in a somewhat similar fashion to certain items of the BBC which sometimes fail in the objective of true responsibility towards accuracy where idealogies seem to take preference over reality!

One also wonders where this writer's sense of patriotism stems from if any while carrying a very Sinhalese sounding name when he takes it upon himself to make such an authoritative sounding statement where most of it seem speculative and perhaps picked up on hearesay and blended in with Tami tiger propaganda which is rife in the West as many discerning observers and analysts are aware of ? So which bucket of sycophancy is Mr Jayasinghe carrying? Perhaps one with the insignia UNP splashed in red and filled with disillussioned rhetoric? as it seems fairly obvious that the intent of the item is to discredit the Government of Sri Lanka and her Armed Forces! Something a certain Mr PK Balachandran of the Hindusthan Times chain should also take note of!

This report about the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) flying two light fixed-wing planes to hit two bases in the north-eastern Weli Oya region, where Security Forces launched a new drive against the rebels on Saturday, and that they dropped three bombs at two locations and flew back seems as insignificant to the relativities involved as well as ambiguous to the point where the bias of the writer seems to show despite pehaps a touch of conscience to want to add that "the damage caused is insignificant and caused no deaths but the attack symbolic", so what does it symbolise? one might want to ask Mr Jayasinghe. Is there such ingenuity amongst a bunch of terrorists on the run to be capable of such a smooth operation as portrayed by this item or is it wishful thinking bordering on ones mental creativity?

However, there needs no rocket science to be aware that 'they' could have coordinates of military installations, something easily accessible if the right means of access were used especially within Sri Lanka and an understatement. That only one soldier was injured in the attacks on sites used as ground troop bases also seems an obvious parochiality perhaps intended to dilute to a degree what the report is insinuating but the report of the Defence Ministry's immediate response that the air force scrambled intercepter aircraft and that the terrorists who are fighting a losing insurgent campaign in the island's north had withdrawn adds more to the credibility of what really transpired in whatever manifestation although unconfirmed! Surely this was another botched attempt by the terrorists to infiltrate Sri Lanka's defences albeit totally blown out of proportion by the distorted presentation by Amal Jayasinghe in Yahoo news which suggests that "the terrorists are still a force to contend with" when all the credible reports, facts and figure suggest to the contrary! and that realistically the LTTE are a spent force on their last legs prior to their impending annihilation

It has to be highlighted towards portraying the indelible reality that when the Defence Ministry reports ground troops beating back a two-pronged assault by the Tigers in the Weli Oya region on Saturday a total of 54 Tiger guerrillas were killed in separate clashes with Security Forces on Saturday and heavy ground fighting was continuing where seven troops were reported killed towards which by way of response there has been an ominous silence from the terrorists. Latest Defence Ministry stats indicating 3,178 Tigers as haing been killed by Security Forces this year according to official figures and the military having lost 230 soldiers in 2008 invariably points to the reality that it is the LTTE that are being decimated and that they are on a path to oblivion while delving deeper into another report that the latest conscripts to their dwindling manpower resourses comprise mainly of women and children!

Independent verification of the tolls as reported in this item is justifiably impossible as Colombo bars journalists and rights groups from combat areas and rebel-held territory mostly for their personal safety as well as the bounden right to prevent falsified news reports from being circulated around the world with their particular biases. In reality there seems to be a felt need to lay down stipulations to these biased news reporting journalist towards their bounden responsibilities towards a Sovereign Nation fighting terrorism!

However when Sri Lanka's senior military officials insist the terrorists have been considerably weakened after being driven out from the Island's East last July although they have still been able to carry out spectacular strikes around the country they aren't mincing their words! 'Spectacular Strikes' in the context of what perhap is tantamount to fireworks displays in tandem with a pitiful attempt at aerial bombardment from a single engined homemade aircraft with respect to this particular reference yet never detracting from how cowardly and spineless the recent attacks have been as the targets were mostly innocent civilians and defenceless members of the public apart from this.

That the terrorists assassinated a senior respected and very progressive cabinet minister earlier this month is the salient truth but to suggest that they inflicted heavy losses on Security Forces in battle on Wednesday and smashed a military airbase six months ago is part exaggeration and part unconfirmable innuendo which have been concocted into a cocktail of misinformation perhaps based on a single falsified news report by an indiscriminate journalist or a few of them roaming around Sri Lanka in the manner of Vultures in search of prey ready to pounce on anything.

Sadly such actions merely contribute to the wrongful portrayal of a scourge of vermin needing to be wiped out towards the well being of Sri Lanka which perhaps lends them a false sense of security that foreign news reports such as these are strengthening their cause which of course must have the opposite effect as it surely increases international contempt and disdain.

The real truth of the matter seems to be the pitiful suicidal instincts of a debilitated terrorist group who in desperation attempt to wage a war of attrition against an all powerful and well focussed Sri Lankan Armed Force often portrayed as in this instance by the ignorance and apathy of their supportives which in all probabilities will hasten their elimination rather than augment their resurrection if that is the objective behind such portrayals!
