SAVE THE LIBERATED MASSES OF TH EAST FROM THE CONSPIRACIES OF TERRORIST PROXIES.

A.A.M.NIZAM MATARA

ons to quench the thirst of war-mongers in the Northern Province dreaming for a separatist Tamil Ealam. Virtually it was a land under siege by the ruthless inhuman terrorist gang. It was when such a calamity was in existence in the East, our valiant soldiers under the splendid guidance of the Government and the defense command, trekking dangerous mine fields, dodging hazardous enemy fire, crawling through death traps, sacrificing their life and limb liberated the entrapped and enslaved people in the Eastern Province enabling them to breathe the air of freedom, and enjoy the taste of democracy. Sadly, for some political opportunists, this liberation, a historical feat, and the sacrifices made by the security forces were utterly insignificant and they dubbed the liberation as nothing but holding to a “Large Jungle Area”.

These Thoppigala Jungle Land psychopaths who shamelessly belittled and derided the sacrifices of our gallant forces by ridiculing it as “any devil could fight a war”, opposed, from the very beginning, the liberation of the Eastern Province and freeing the innocent masses from decades of slavery. These psychopaths together with the NGO vultures claimed that the terrorists are a potent force who cannot be defeated militarily, and any attempt to do so would cause colossal loss of life.

The liberation of the East actually began when the LTTE ceased the Mavil Aru Anicut denying irrigable and drinking water for several thousand acres of paddy land and thousands of innocent people, and attacked Muttur and chased away over 40,000 people from there and tried to capture army and police posts in that area.

When the forces were making steady progress refuting the “non-defeatable” claims of the skeptics and liberating occupied villages and towns one after the other with the barest minimum civilian casualties, the security forces as well as the government came under strong criticism from these political opportunists and antisocial elements blaming the government and the security forces for:

  • Uprooting the people from their traditional habitations;
  • Displacing several hundred thousand people and forcing them to languish in unhygienic camps as Internally Displaced People (IDPs);
  • Denying the universal right of people to return to their own habitations and settling them forcibly in hostile uninhabitable terrain;
  • Failing to provide adequate food supplies and basic amenities to the so-called IDPs;
  • Fighting a bogus war according to a surreptitious pact between the government and the LTTE;
    Allowing the armed LTTE cadres to move into Wanni areas together with the heavy artillery without confronting and harming them;
  • Taking over barren land that was left out by the LTTEE for tactical reasons, so on and so forth.

Eschewing and disdaining all these baseless, politically expedient criticisms and statements oriented towards appeasing foreign funding sources, the government robustly backed the security forces on the one hand and launched massive programmes to alleviate the sufferings of the liberated masses and for the economic revival of the province that remained neglected for decades.

Under the national rebuilding and the East reawakening programmes launched and being implemented by the government with the enthusiastic cooperation of the masses

  • Modern bridges are being built facilitating transportation to hitherto unaccessible rural villages;
    New roads are being constructed connecting rural villages with the towns;
  • Several thousand acres of paddy land left abandoned has been reclaimed for cultivation after a lapse of several years;
  • Several thousand acres are being cultivated with maize, sugar cane and other crops;
  • Neglected industrial units such as Kantalai Sugar Factory, Valachchenai Paper Factory, Pulmuddai Mineral Sands Corporation, and similar neglected and abandoned units have been revitalized;
  • Fishery harbours are being invigorated with adequate anchoring facilities;
    Fishermen are being offered with boats and modern fishing gear;
  • Rail services are being improved with the opening of new railway stations;
  • SLTB depots are being modernized with provision of additional busses and with bus services on new routes;
  • Steps have been taken establish an extensive industrial zone in Trincomalee;
    Arrangements have been made to establish Sri Lanka’s second largest coal power plant in Sampur;
  • New houses under several housing schemes are being built to meet the housing needs of the people affected by the Tsunami and other people who are without houses;
  • Steps have been taken to develop the Oluvil harbour and adjoining facilities;
  • Schools are being provided adequate facilities, renovated, and even new schools are being constructed to educate the children some of whom even aged over 20 years had been deprived of education for over two decades;

These positive measures have immensely helped not only to develop this neglected province but also to alleviate the poverty of the masses as well as to strengthen the confidence of a large segment of the Eastern Proince masses who were under the jackboots of the terrorists, who did not have any taste of democracy and who mistakenly believed that terrorism is the means conducive to achieve their objectives.

Liberation of this province and affording the masses to breathe the air of freedom and enjoy the fruits of democracy is a great achievement. All attempts should be made to facilitate these liberated masses to enjoy the fruits of freedom and divert them from the ordeal of terrorism which they used to uphold. It was indeed a great victory that we Sri Lankans were able to liberate these masses from the throngs of terrorists and show them the virtues of freedom and democracy. All peace loving masses should extend their fullest cooperation and assistance to these deserving masses in their march to freedom and save them from the conspiracies of political opportunists and vicious antisocial NGO vultures who are making pernicious and shameless attempts to throw these masses to the jaws of the terrorists once again.
