To Oppose Laying Down Arms Would Be To Oppose Peace

Confirming speculation from many quarters as to their sincerity and real intent the LTTE rebels have unequivocally opposed calls to disarm in exchange for allowing refugees to return to army-controlled areas. If this is not an indication of what lies within their designs for the future there must be a devious ambivalence which can be attributed to a far deeper intent of motivation towards their own ends while playing on the mood of the Goverment and its handouts which have thus far promoted an air of bravado amongst the cohorts of the infamous whose bargaining tools have been greatly diminished.

Although the forthcoming round of Peace Talks in Thailand betweenThe Tamil Tigers and Government hoping to end two decades of war dwells on federal models of governing as a way to meet rebel demands for self-rule without compromising territorial integrity. As the Government continues to proclaim what it sees as their interpretations of a lasting peace it seems an insurmoutable task in as far as resolving the credibilities of the LTTE in holding them to their promises and sincerities which saw many handshakes and back pattings and the bogus ad libings tantamount to mere theatrics during the past Peace Meetings as their opposition to the de-commissioning of weapons and the desire to broadcast their dialogue of propaganda to the Nation with the assistance of Norway clearly indicates their real intent.

In a world recognized Democracy, once torn apart by LTTE attrocities, the Military of the ruling power has every right to demand the laying down of arms and denouncing of their idealogies before any Peace Talks can continue towards a positive means of resolution as otherwise it would be a waste of time and money for all concerened ! especially the dwindling economy of the Nation which carries the tab, but the LTTE have once again chosen a contradictary path which leaves little room for any negotiations and may project their own condemnation by an irate global community growing tired of their antics and consciously aware of where they really belong and what their rights are!

The Insipid rhetoric of their idealogue Anton Balasingham has once again surfaced in saying quote"Disarming or decommissions of either heavy or light weapons is non-negotiable," end quote and as chief negotiator of the Liberation Tigers what does his stance indicate other than a hidden agenda and one which also indicates provocation which has been turned around and thrown in the face of Sri Lankan Security which has every right to assert its dedications towards preserving the Nation?

The feeble minded interpretations of LTTE representation now seem to rest on expressions of their dissatisfaction that a congenial atmosphere for Peace is non existent through the demands of the Nations Armed Forces, its Presidency and the Sinhala population who legitimately demand a laying down of arms and by persisting in opposing the call they seem to believe that their voice towards their means is justifiable whereas it is very simply the opposite! Theirs is the provocation and they would be the sore losers should they not come clean in the end.Contrary to the Balasingham slogan the sooner De-Commissioning was up for discussion the better off they would be albeit there being no guarantees that their leadership would not be aprehended for crimes against humanity.

It is the appointed right of the Armed Forces of a Nation to defend it against subversion, internal and external armed insurrection on behalf of its population and the idiom has been analyzed through the annals of history and accepted and if the LTTE for a moment think that their concept of acheiving objectives through pseudo-sabre rattling could ever be made manifest by their stance of arrogance they must be advised that they are in violation of the normal parameters of Democracy, and that their bluff needs to be called.

They should also be made aware that they are in no position to dictate terms using threatening rhetoric towards a return to their former attrocities as the World will not buy that by any stretch of the imagination. The die has been cast and for Peace to return to this Fair Isle their co-operation and compromise is needed for the common cause where all Sri Lankans will continue to enjoy what has now been accepted by many as a return to a lasting peace with no ominous threats overshadowing the future. And what better way to accomplish this eventuality other than to lay down arms and merge into the already existing multitude of peaceloving Sri Lankans!
