Dark Premonitions Over The Political Horizon Of Sri Lanka !

The Nation Of Sri Lanka has suddenly either been calmed over the interim signing of the P-TOMS or shocked into submission with a seemingly circumspect President isolated within her own party divided over the related issue and distanced from some important allies most significantly the JVP and the JHU where there are others.

To add to her chagrin internal party support seems bleak and contained to a handful of supportive ministers and deputy ministers, where a greater part of the SLFP appears to be maintaining a stiff upperlip about the P-TOMS waiting for a significant turn of events which will either set the appropriate wheels of action into forward or reverse gear as appropriately as the case may be.

In the simplest of terms, where the signing of the P-TOMS will eventually lead to seems still shrouded in mystery.Gone are the onetime vociferous supportives of the President who were once outspoken in their support as a sudden chill seems to have permeated the hallowed halls of Parliament where significant personages seem conspicuously absent providing all the pointers towards illustrating a party of divided opinions.

All this in the backdrop of unknown eventualities as far as the P-TOMS and the Continuity Process are concerned, where the UNP led Ranil Wickremasinghe is hinting at early elections and the Tamil Tigers already negotiating with the Aid Donors for their share of the Pie in the Sky!

The President in the meantime has to ponder over her future and find a means to assuage the anxieties of the Sinhala Nation while justifying the path she has chosen to tread in defiance of the pitfalls the Nation could face which are predictably, thought provoking, as negatively consequential as a result of the P-TOMS. This involves the LTTE who are neither a representation of all the Tamils of Sri Lanka nor have they shown any faith towards recognition of Sri Lankan Sovereignity as openy proclaimed recently by their substitute leadership Thamilselvam in the conspicuous absence of Velupillai Pirapaharan!

Their continued attrocities, ceasefire violations and the latest attack on members of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces indeed justifiy many anxieties of the Sinhala Nation and the signs are by no means promising that the P-TOMS would be the key towards Sri Lankan posterity!.

Synonymously the LTTE have now upped their ante as far as demands from the Government are concerned and casually hinting at a return to what some analysts see as War yet hushed down and the theme downplayed by prominent personalities such as the Nation's revered Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar believes the Tigers are incapable of winning any war given their present circumstances and hence the threat a mere speculation!

Strangely the LTTE also appear to be bereft of their onetime head honco Pirapaharan who has been strangely silent for months now after the Tsunami. SP Thamichelvam, their current spokesperson treading thinly on an ice which could easily crack beneath him as he indulges in his ultimatums to the Government of Sri Lanka and wanders into territory which could prove very detrimental to the existence of his terror group, given the right response from the Government and the International Community which also incorporates neighbouring superpower India!

The President of Sri Lanka in patriotic high gear as she she proclaims to be is described as being creative and innovative through her own body language viewed by the analysts and that there seems to be a great future for the Nation through her direction. While some of her most vehement critics believe it self centred and opportunistic with no real concerns for a worst case scenario as a result of being overly conciliatory to the terrorists.

She also appears well focussed in her speculative leanings towards previously unthought of allies who beyond the norm of being opportunists themselves are none other than those in waiting to spring into action no sooner the weaknesses of the current administration are exposed towards their advantage completely.

In this respect the UNP and the TNA immediately come to mind, the latter being an LTTE proxy and one might ask concernedly ,whither the Sinhala Nation, its unitarity sovereignity and territorial integrity which the President seems to have now placed on the backburner and jeopardy imminent should there be no remedial action taken by the forces capable of countering a tumultuous slide towards adversity the Nation could easily find itself in should vulnerabilities be exposed!

There are visible cracks in the inner sanctum of the UPFA also indicated by the recent meanderings involving many indiscretions and wavering of policy related to the matters involving the Provincial Council of the Western Province where both the UNP and the SLFP of the President have shown their respective achilles heels in jumping from one candidate to another over its election of Chief Minister. Once deposed Candidate has re staked his claim towards the post backed by a once dissenting UNP while his replacement an SLFPer is refusing to be ousted on legitimate grounds as the President in an seemingly desperate attempt tries to assert her authority.

This may be a precursor to greater adversities in her divided political camp alongside the patronage being extended to her loyalists towards cementing her party and extending gratuities to those who support the P-TOMS within her camp!

There is much speculation the the Provincial Councils may fall within the controlling rights of the JVP which could set a completely different trend in the composure of Sri Lankan Politics if it is an indication of the mood of the voter in a subsequent election!

Dark premonitions however, must surely loom over the political horizon of Sri Lanka in the minds of many who are concerned about the implications of the P-TOMS and the relativities of LTTE participation with direct access to the Finances involved .

Therefore it can be circumspectly assumed that the days to come will surely unfold the realities and the consequences of the P-TOMS and the participation of the terrorists towards its disbursement where it is hoped a Nation in anxiety will not have to brace for unknown sequential consequences perhaps far worse than the tsunami itself which ironically is the harbinger of this very turn of events within the Nation!
