A
Politically United Sri Lanka The Best Alternative.
Having come this far towards a lasting peace in Sri Lanka there can be
no haste applied towards dismantling whatever good has come out of it
and the urgency by the united opposition parties to pose huge protests
against the Government at this stage can be likened to a rush by the President
of the United States and the Prime Minister of Britain to wage an all
out war against Iraq with little consideration for its implications and
fall out which will not only affect the Mid- East but perhaps the entire
world.A gradual transition seems more in order towards many anomalies
involving Sri Lanka's cautious transition from war torn to peaceful as
the present peaceful trend within the land continues.
Undoubtely there are many grey areas relative to the needs of the Nation
which need to be resolved, the cost of living has spiralled together with
the quality of life for many caught up in its wake and there are indications
that too many concessions are aparently being granted to a terrorist entity
whose objectives have hardly detracted from their original presentations
with no remorse or condesendance towards disarming which indeed has a
remarkable similarity to the moves of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein playing
mind games with the rest of the world but in Sri Lanka quite unlike the
Mid -East there has prevailed a much needed calm recently and there the
analogy ends as after decades of bitter conflict, finally a soothing wind
seems to be blowing across the land and maintaining its continuance has
to be considered the first priority before a dismantling of the present
regime as seen by its opposition which should be placed on the back burner
and the role of watchdog taken on which is probably more prudent towards
monitoring current events in Sri Lanka in its best interests.
Indiscriminate dissolution of the present Administration could easily
project an unrest leading to turmoil which would seem foolhardy in the
face of the responses towards cementing ethnic rifts between the Sinhala
, Tamil and Muslim Communities by world powers pledging aid and support
with a view to ending all hostilities which surely takes pride of place
over any sabre rattling towards displacing the incumbent Administration
whose moves towards peace have at least produced a year of calm and a
distaste for conflict on both sides. Perhaps it is a ploy by the LTTE
to indicate a rejection of conflict, or perhaps they have realised its
futility but for whatever its worth their resignations towards peace at
present needs imperative consideration irrespective of how they need to
be brough to terms eventually.
Impotent as the progress seem in many areas of issues relative to the
imminent needs of the average person it has to be accepted that here at
least is a beginning towards a future of greater promise as hostilities
have ceased and a certain joining of hands between the estranged ethnicities
seem to be taking place at a time when the free flow of goods and accessibility
to all parts of the Island seem to be opening up in a manner conducive
towards the harmony which Sri Lanka images to the rest of the world as
a predominantly tolerant Buddhist Nation of great beauty, wisdom and a
heritage known for centuries yet one which has been shrouded in the vestiges
of Civil War and hatred born of a colonial past and dissentment created
more by foreign influences and interference rather than its cultural past
which now seems to have resolved its ethnic differences even to a degree
which is a great beginning and is headed for success at least in some
small measure which needs recognition.
The foremost priority towards resolving the Nation's woes at present however
seems to be the need to boost the economy to accommodate the needs of
poverty, eliminate unsolicited foreign interference such as that of Norway
whose biases stick out like sore thumbs and the need to gradulally dismantle
the functioning of the LTTE and corall them for their past crimes so attrocious
and inhumane that they have left behind indelible scars in certain regions
and communities still trying to recover.
It would be folly to believe that the LTTE are a catalyst towards peace
within the land and to the contrary it would seem acceptable to all if
the overtures towards peace involved direct communications between the
ethnicities taken up by a united political force which would boost to
a great degree the confidence of the Nation unsure of where all the posturing
between the UNF and the LTTE will lead eventually.
A remarkable accomplishment of merit awaits the unification of Sri Lankan
political forces towards a better Sri Lanka where its various nationalities
could live in harmony and a much needed Firewall of Security built around
it to prevent terrorist entities from gaining a stranglehold on its democratic
infrastructure but a sad demise to the promise of a better future awaits
disunity and disagreement which if implemented through the power of office
soleley for political survival could harm Sri Lanka's credentials both
Nationally and globally as it surfaces from its strife tattered past.
A politically united Sri Lanka being the best alternative and the best
option towards rebuilding the future in this resplendant land of ours.
