The Presidential Role Towards A Lasting Peace Becoming An Eventuality.

Sri Lanka seems to be the only Democratic Nation in the world where International Accords and the Principles of International Law are being made a complete hash of where a Democratically Elected Government albeit the questionable nature of the credentials of the present Government are resorting to circumvention, and circumspect fashioning of an ill conceived Memorandum of Understanding and a Peace Accord for the sheer convenience of bartering with an infamous terrorist organization who neither have the right to be where they are presently, shoulder to shoulder with the UNF nor any right to any demands of the nature of their present bill of lading which entails safe passage towards their best interest while continuing to maintain their terrorist status.

That the President of Sri Lanka the Hon.Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge has indicated many anxieties relative to the UNF Government's unwholesome deals with the LTTE and has objected to the the comical charade of the Norwegian Monitoring Mission blatantly engrossed in the cause of the LTTE with no qualms about its transparencies comes as no surprise although the surprise may very well turn out to be an unexpected one for the administration if she decides to turn tables on the Wickremasinghe Government. One which might have been long in the offing in the best interests of the people of Sri Lanka and a move which may have been long contemplated by this magnanimous lady who much in the fashion of her venerated and respected parents who both held the reins of Sri Lanka in its political history were bestowed the responsibility of leadership, continues the trend albeit the impasses of opposition which she will in all probabilities confront at an appropriate time!

There is hardly a doubt by way of the actions and dialogue of the LTTE that they, despite the pretences shown at Peace Talk level by its two main players Balasingham and Peiris, have a singlemost objective on their agenda which is to carve out a separate state through subterfuge and trickery having failed to acheive this through terrorist attrocities and very visible to many analysts and scholars researching the issue who have indicated time and time again of the dangers of providing too much leeway for the LTTE and should the President who now has the backing of the JVP and other parties, the High Buddhist Clergy and a majority of patriotic and responsible citizens of Sri Lanka banded into joint committees of national interests, resort to a course of actions within her mandate to oust the ruling party, despite the pitfalls projected by some negative analysts she would be well justified as it involves the Security, Territorial Integrity and Sovereignity of Sri Lanka where although its economic infrastructure in a speculative sense might be in temporary jeopardy, the greater priority however lies in securing the Nation from its oppressors while maintaining its unitarity.

Soundly backing the Presidential resolve should she eventually utilize her executive powers is the simplest of rationales that the LTTE have no mandate legally nor morally to continue unabated with their demands and attrocities now veiled to a degree ( as they appear to have realised the value of hit and run techniques and blatant denials of aggression to befuddle the peers of the Peace Process!) as they do not represent the Tamil Community other than fractionally and that too in a self defined idealogy which points out to a "by force of arms" intimidatory control over those who submit to their demands under threat as the more prudent of the Tamil Community both in Sri Lanka . India and other parts of the world have long since discarded the myth that the LTTE could champion the quest for a peaceful existence in all wisdom and have become aware of the danger to their posterity in consorting with the LTTE. In essence a two pronged threat not only to the Sinhala Nation but also the Tamil Community.

In a nutshell what the UNF have done thus far through their MoU with the LTTE despite the calm within the Nation has not been convincing enough towards long term realizations of peace where a certain 'Sword of Damoclese' in the form of the LTTE continues to hang over the Sinhala Nation as they are unrelenting about maintaining their hostile posture towards the legitimacy of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and their maintainance of de-facto administrations in parts of the North and East are a clear indication that the UNF has not done its homework right before they embarked on the MoU venture which has given too much leeway to the LTTE who have misconstrued it as a safe passage to their claims and it is probably upto Presidential wisdom to prove this wrong and to renew hopes towards maintaining a stance which will assert all Sri Lankans of a future to look forward to without the malignancy of an impending terrorist threat which will undoubtedly hang over the Nation until completely removed and a reality which the UNF constantly shrugs off for some mysterious reason.

In a post September the 11th World where terrorism has virtually ground to a halt elsewhere, ironically it appears to be an item of tolerance and bartering with by the incumbent Administration of Sri Lanka much to the concerns sometimes mixed with mirth of the opposition factions and the President who has stopped short of ridiculing the modus operandi of the UNF relative to the LTTE and the role being played by the SLMM who are fast becoming a joke in the eyes of the more discerning.

There is a paradox of sorts involving the UNF definition of Peace for Sri Lanka and the PA-JVP clarity in illustrating the betrayal of the Sinhala Nation to a terrorist entity where a symbiotic dependance of the two factions within the administrative infrastructure at opposite end may ensue as they may eventually be confronted with a felt need to unite in order to overcome the threat of the LTTE which will continue to be one until its leadership and chief operatives are shackled.

The return to any form of aggression would be catastrophic to Sri Lanka as already certain individuals such as Anton Balasingham and Thamilchelvam have been hinting indiscriminately at a certain willingness to confront the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and cross Army Lines though not necessarily with any anticipated succes or serious intent it is hoped! as they are more than likely to be snuffed out at the very inception with the backing of a new World Order which has pledged support towards the very cause yet an enigma for the Administration as well as the Opposition who have a duty bound responsibility towards its panacea and the continuity of the Peace within Sri Lanka.

While the greater implication rests presently on the Wickremasinghe Administration who virtually have the 'Tigers by the Tail' and afraid to let go! The role of the President of Sri Lanka just might be one of primary importance in coralling both the UNF Administration and the LTTE jointly to remove completely their combined threat to the Nation while restoring a permanent peace towards which she needs a mountain of support both nationally and internationally and one which she already seems to have.
