Norway's
Options, Cautioning The LTTE And The Administration's Role
That Norway's Role in Sri Lanka's Peace Process is being depleted and is losing momentum on a daily basis has been further confirmed by the latest LTTE defiance that they will not agree with Norways proposal which discourages illegal bunkers and the forming of a military enclave which is a direct violation of the Peace Process and an embarrassment to LTTE sympathetic Norway. That LTTE high handedness and arrogance in a global climate unequivocally opposed to terrorism is permitted to continue is a curiosity which is not only disdainful in the eyes of the International as well as National Community but is perplexing beyond all norms that govern the existence of a Democratic Sovereign Nation where the bartering taking place between a rather lame duck administration and a terrorist organization which has no right to exist categorically and have been proscribed and Banned from participation in any activities where the Major World Powers are involved and the recent refusal of a visa by the United Kingdom to LTTE hot shot Thamilselvam is a prime example of this rationale. That the Norwegian Peace Monitors are wasting the tax payers hard earned money as well as exasperating the Sinhala Nation sometimes angered at Norway's bi- partisan favouritism of the LTTE as well as the Tamil community within Norway is explicitly portrayed by the disparity of numbers of Tamils offset against the Sinhalese granted entry into Norway which represents the primary bias and Perhaps a noteworthy factor towards considering Norway's real intent and its net worth in the Peace Talks and as a majority of the Sinhala Nation and a greater faction of its High Buddhist Clergy have begun demanding, a viable reason to send the Norwegians packing. Norway in the eyes of many qualified analysts is an entity which probably should not have been invited to participate in the first place as their role had digressed from being observers and moderators to that of adjudicators and enforcers to a greater degree of the definitions though sometimes veiled in insincere subtleties of pretended impartiality such as the manner in which they very quickly switched stances in the incidents involving the Sri Lankans sinking of an LTTE vessel. The wishfully thinking LTTE in the meantime , ably supported by Norway continue to thrust impossible demands at the Government who literally have them by their tails, afraid to let go in view of anticipated adverse fall out as the LTTE wait in hope for their demands and objectives to be realised in a catch 22 situation for the Administration where the only losers in the long run would be the Sinhala Nation. A reality which has come to pass by way of the Administration's inability to take charge of what is a democratic and undeniable right where the oppressors sensing this weakness continue to pressure the UNF leader and hence the impasse which should have been settled unquestionably if a tougher stance was taken to inform the LTTE that their's is a lost cause with no real representation or backing from their own community and that it is in fact the Status Quo in charge here with no de facto pretense. Ironically the LTTE demand that an international ban on their organisation be lifted which has been acceded to in Sri Lanka, but remains in place in the United States, the European Economic Union and elsewhere. The LTTE operations in these countries have been shut down and their fund-raising activities made illegal. Just recently a notorious LTTE campaigner in Montreal Canada who blatantly went about displaying an LTTE logo on his vehicle and acting rather arrogantly about his LTTE connections was apprehended and taken into custody for his part in a false passport racket, money laundering , people smuggling and various other crimes related to underground LTTE activity monitored by the National Police the RCMP .The LTTE as a terrorist organisation is now in international criminal records, its known funds, estimated to be around $4 billion, frozen and no recognition given officially in any other part of the world. The Tigers blame the Sri Lankan prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, for the international bans, but he cannot get them lifted. Nor, it seems, can the LTTE friendly Norwegians. Almost as compensation in a perplexing sense however the LTTE are permitted to continue their charade of a mock administration in parts of the North and North East with no attempt by the Sri Lankan Administration to dismantle what is by and large an illegal operation and a stepping stone towards further consolidation of objectives based on the current LTTE demands for an interim administration which may have dire repercussions for the future of Sri Lanka should they be heeded as an alternative towards taking affirmative action to dissuade them and therein seems to lie the dilemma facing the Administration having foolishly committed to concessions misconstrued by the LTTE as they go ahead towards further persistance for secession which they have the nerve to deny. Shades of the condescending Arab permitting his camel a foot in his tent as the eventuality of the camel's complete entry into the tent results and the Arab ignominiously dumped outside, perhaps! In this case however the reprisals may be far more grievous than a dumping!!
The LTTE must never be afforded any opportunity to further complicate the Peace prevailing or regroup towards further insurrection as rumored as the Government in charge is expected to set in place the machinery and strategy to disillusion the LTTE that theirs will be a lost cause should they revert to the futile path of aggression as it may even prove to be self destructive in more ways than one. The Norwegian Monitors in the meantime should seriously re-think their options towards either digressing from their LTTE favouritism or packing their bags and returning to Norway by virtue of their failed manouvres as was the case during a botched involvement in the Palestine-Israel conflict and other examples which further compounded the issues at and re-think policies of bi- partisan favouritism towards the LTTE which they have been rather blatant about with no misgivings! The Administration in a sense perhaps is in the driving seat towards securing Sri Lanka's progress towards economic recovery and stabilizing the Peace Process but only if it manouvres correctly reminding Norway of its original role and maintaining its resolve to be unwilting under LTTE pressure in securing and fortifying the Nation's Sovereignity and Territorial Integrity which if unaccomplishable should be entrusted to an entity or entities more capable!
