Anticipated US Investigative Team To Sri Lanka Sounds Ominous For The LTTE !If as reported in the current edition of the Sunday Times that The
United States is sending a top level team to Sri Lanka comprising of
agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US State
Department who will arrive in Colombo on January 24 this would surely
be a precursor to a greater show of solidarity and strength towards
the Sri Lankan Administration by the Most Powerful Nation in the world.
Something which has never been openly declared previously with the tone
of insistence and assertiveness by the USA which should send out a clear
message to the LTTE! When the US Government according to the information conveyed by the Sunday
Times portrays the significance of involvement in Sri Lanka's present
situation involving the insurgent terrorists of the LTTE the world at
large might be better off taking note of its importance and significance
of the reality that even the Most Powerful Nation in the world seems to
have decided that enough is enough! The US team while being more of a
combined investigative team comprising of staff from the Federal Bureau
Of Investigation (FBI) and the US State Department will familiarize themselves
with the prevailing security situation and activities of the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It may also be indicative of a more powerful response
towards greater bearing on the US Government's determination to stamp
out global terrorism where the stamping out of the LTTE too might be consequential
though academic. The US team is reported to have embarked on an investigative journey
to determine matters relating to Tiger guerrilla links to other terror
groups against whom US is now waging a war. It is also likely to focus
on money laundering and similar activity by Tiger guerrilla groups in
violation of US laws as well as sending a clear signal to them that their
transparencies have at long last been spotlighted in their entirety and
that they are no exceptions in the eyes of the Most Powerful Nation in
the world where all their theatrics and claims of innocence towards all
the attrocities they have perpetrated against a Sovereign Nation will
not go unnoticed nor unpunished. The LTTE in fact are staring the Most
Powerful nation in the face and about time they began changing their attitude
towards their objectives as their nemesis common to all terrorist organizations
in the world appears to be closing in on them. Somewhat appropriately and bearing succesful results, the recent visit to Washington by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samarasinghe has in turn inspired the visit by the US Officials and indicates a direct outcome of the US tour by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera who held talks in Washington D.C. with senior officials of the Department of Defence and officials dealing with counter terrorism, financial crimes and related matters. Rather incomprehensibly the visit of Sri Lankan President HE Mahinda Rajapaksa to Superpower neighbour India has not elicited the same response by the Indian Authorities who have hedged on the responsibility of acting as a deterrent to the LTTE attrocities of recent manifestation where it is thought that greater Indian priorities seem to lie in the appeasement of LTTE supportive factions of Tamil Nadu and a sad irresponsibility towards Regional Security if this indeed be the case! Significantly just last Tuesday the US Ambassador To Sri Lanka Mr. Jeffrey Lunstead in affirmation of US intentions warned the LTTE that if they chose to abandon the search for peace, the Sri Lankan military would emerge stronger, more determined and capable. While speaking at a luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce (Sri Lanka Chapter), he said US military assistance to Sri Lanka would continue and if the LTTE and their supportives read between the lines they should ' logically' conclude if they were able to comprehend the meaning of the term that their insurgent days seem numbered.
