Towards Resolving Political Disunity And Fortifying Sri Lanka.
It seems to be a fact of life that Sri Lanka has indeed taken on politically the form of the proverbial curate's egg, good in parts and bad in some and the reason for this discrepancy from those who believe that all is well within the land after one year of peace is the continued differences of opinion between the three main political parties continually at loggerheads in trying to decide whats best for the country. And to compound it further there are the constant fallings in and out of compatibility between the PA -JVP alliance and the UNF which would be better off in unity towards the future of Sri Lanka as the solidarity of such unity would be unassailable in the eyes of all opponents. Rather curiously this has led to an almost continuous hankering for meaningless dialogue between the UNF and the joint ventures of the PA-JVP each trying to convince the Nation that their's is the best manifesto. Somehow this contest of wills between the two sides despite carrying many differences of opinion seems to be cautious in their every move in an almost sub-conscious commitment towards maintaining the peace as the ever present entity the LTTE continuing their progress towards their own idealogies helped by what the Government has extended to them seems to be a deterrent towards any moves on the part of the national parties towards reconciling their differences and uniting to overcome the LTTE's continued and at most times unwelcome presence which has been a regrettable error made by the UNF in being overly conciliatory towards them.It appears that the UNF handouts to the LTTE have been interpreted as a reprieve for what they have to account for by way of crimes against humanity and a Sovereign Nation at the expense of Sinhala unity. However the LTTE too seems to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea as the cracks within their camp seem to be emerging through a power struggle between supremo Piraphakaran and idealogue Balasingham. They appear to be bungling their way through an extensive effort towards their own survival each with their own distorted version of the means to posterity for their community which realistically is neither fully accepted by the Tamil Community nor legitimate in the eyes of the world as their charade continues. Especially the contradictary dialogue for peace and the need for its continuity through lip service on one hand and the veiled threats to return to a quest for eelam should they be thrust into a corner. Their blatant ceasefire violations compounded with an arms buildup, conscriptions and a continued unabated existence bear testimony to this fact and perhaps a time for a united political front to capitalise on what may be the achilles heel of the LTTE who seem to be in disarray with nowhere to go should an imposing thrust at negating their credibility be launched by a determined , united and unassailable representation of the Sinhala Nation and its allies keen to see the demise of the LTTE. Despite the acceptance by many that a PA-JVP alliance could settle the more important core issues within Sri Lanka should they replace the Present Administration in the event of dissolution it might not necessarily be the solution as it would more than likely give way to further confusion within the Nation which has now reached a stage of calm and tranquility which cannot be let go but not at the expense of compromising the principles of democracy or a giving way to secession sought by the LTTE and affording them a trend of thought which may be interpreted as weakness and disunity amongst the majority Sinhalese. There has been a strange aberration of the norm of LTTE dialogue however emanating from Anton Balasingham contradictary to earlier predilections that they would return to conflict in the event of the UNF being felled and the PA taking charge as he has stated that the Peace process will continue despite a change of Administration if he can be trusted that is but perhaps a clear indication that the LTTE now know what their real options are and perhaps also an indication of their awareness of the political trend in the country voiced by its citizens who have shown much opposition to the present administration whose recent economic policies have once again left the Nation in a shambles together with the poor of the land whose needs have mostly been bypassed for those of the affluent. The one redeeming factor for Sri Lanka towards a lasting peace is the need for reconciliation rather than contestation and acrimony between the political representations in Parliament and a moderate attitude adopted in how they relate to one another towards resolving the Nation's woes on a common platform created primarily towards showing the LTTE whose in charge! United We Stand and Divided We Fall !
