Sri Lankan President's Proposal For A Forum Of Diverse Political Parties To Discuss Peace, A Brilliant Move !Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's proposal to establish a forum of political parties represented in parliament to discuss the issues to be raised in the peace talks on the ethnic question appears to be a brilliant move which will not only be to the great chagrin of the LTTE with a proverbial spanner thrown in their works! but also bring to bear their falsely represented status as the sole representatives of the Sri Lankan Tamil community ! This is probably the reason why there are reports which have also surfaced in the Indian News Media that the LTTE are expected to vehemently oppose it which sounds somewhat preposterous if viewed logically as they are a group of proscribed outlaws with little or no say in Parliamentary proceedings but in an ambiguous sense their proxy representation in Parliament the TNA are more than likely to be the standard bearer towards their opposition to the President's proposal. Ironically there are latest reports that the leadership of the TNA Mr. Sampanthan does not seem to carry that much credibility with the USA either, as he has been taken in for questioning at a US Immigration port of entry and exit during an overseas trip to the US and Canada on suspicion of his bona fides which should speak volumes for the credibilities of the TNA. There are reports of intense grilling and searching of his person where he has been paid scant respect by the greatest superpower in the world and translates to the contempt it has for anyone aligned with a terror group as Sampanthans alliances and affiliations with the LTTE are well known within the international community. The TNA's and Sampanthan's legitimacies towards their credibilities and status in parliament is circumspect also back in Sri Lanka where their entry into Parliament has been questioned by the European Union monitors of the last general Election as being dubious and corrupt and only the diffidence of the Commissioner of Elections to challenge them has paved their way into Parliament and now hold a proxy for the LTTE which by itself is a shambles based on rationality. The fact of the matter then is that the LTTE seem to be left with little ground to stand on if they wish to oppose the President's proposal through their somewhat dubious proxies in Parliament which would further hamper their objectives as their ship is in great danger of losing its rudder! together with their claim to be the sole representatives of the Tamil Community in Sri Lanka whch has been often dispelled as a myth by the more discerning analysts and many of the Tamil Community also! The most important aspect of the President's proposal is the involvement of diverse Tamil Representation which are anti - LTTE and could deal a body blow to their very existence. It has been reported by reliable sources that this has caused great apprehension among the higher echelon of the mainstream LTTE of Velupillai Pirapaharan (Prabhakaran) and that they have voiced their need to be recognized as the sole representative of the Tamils in the North and North East of Sri Lanka while their dilemmas towards the reality of this recognition has been further disrupted by the "Karuna Factor' and the breakaway faction of Karuna which appears to have a greater stake to this claim all things considered. Thus it comes as no surprise that the LTTE have set a pre-condition based on their recognition if they are to continue the Peace Negotiations which indeed appears to be a moral victory for both the President and Karuna where the LTTE could be teetering on the brink of their demise which Karuna himself has been quoted as hinting at in a recent address to the British Media through the Tamil Service of the BBC in a telephone interview. He has been quoted as saying that "Velupillai Pirapaharan's days are numbered "and certainly has an ominous ring to it! The issue of sole representation as claimed by the LTTE is significant by way of its insincerity and inaccuracy which if the details were laid bare would convey to the world that their's is a forced representation of the Tamil Community under threat, intimidation and coercion which has brought on a pro - LTTE tirade in their various news sources which have had the affront to allege that the President's proposal is an attempt to confuse matters when all it does is lay bare the impartiality and diversity of thought towards the best interests of the Tamil Community which can ill afford to be represented by a group of impenitent terrorists as sole representatives! In light of the President's proposal towards diversity of Tamil representation, probably as an aftermath to the resounding UPFA (PA/JVP) win in the Provincial Council Elections, another reality appears to be unravelling with relativity to the current situation where the Eelam People's Democratic Party EPDP led by Douglas Devananda seems very favourable towardsLTTE breakaway Karuna 's political representation in Parliament while becoming, as quoted," part of the national democratic mainstream" and acquire domestic and international legitimacy which seems to be the greatest concern of the mainstream LTTE as it attests to their questionable right to exist? Already on a bad footing with their attitude of defiance towards remaining as fully armed terrorists. it has been envisioned by many in the South that the LTTE now carry a healthy respect for Karuna's capabilities towards weakening them in the East and North East of Sri Lanka, purportedly LTTE strongholds and could be utilised as a destructive medium towards eliminating the LTTE completely if used prudently. The LTTE with relative imperception continue to hurl accusations of official Sri Lankan collaboration with the breakaway faction of Karuna in a voice in the wilderness type exasperation while continuing to bear their fangs in a somewhat futile manner as their anxieties against Presidential resolve towards the restoration of Sri Lanka increase and the ' Karuna Factor' remains a dangerous unknown! |
