A Rally Establishing Substantial
Presidential Confidences And Doubts About The UNF's Continuity.
Perhaps The Town Hall Rally of over a hundred thousand participants have
heard what amounts to a 'Deja Vue' which all opposition parties and a
very frustrated Nation have long anticipated where the President has indicated
a distinct possibility of a New Government under her leadership which
is well within her Executive Powers and the Constitution of Sri Lanka
and perhaps the only rational solution to stem the tide of LTTE confidences
that their goals are being met whether inadvertently or not by the incumbent
Administration, on their relentless and sometimes obvious quest for seccession
despite their many denials that it no longer remains on their agenda.
Bearing in mind that the LTTE idealogues have been 'cock a hoop' lately
brimming with overconfidence, together with the voices of the LTTE propaganda
machines both locally and overseas who seem to have taken for granted
that their response to the Government proposed devolution package, refurbished
with unacceptable counter proposals to accommodate their whims and fancies
will be the ultimate and deciding means towards the end to the ethnic
conflict by their definition to which the latest concerns of the Indian
Government which has recognized the need to protect Sri lanka from any
illegal attempts by the LTTE to coerce a relinquishing of any Sovereign
Part of Sri Lanka greatly ovepowers LTTE confidences, the Presidential
Transcript naturally conforms to one of legitimacy and a sovereign right
where the incumbent Administration needs to be ousted and replaced in
a perfectly natural order in the best interests of Sri Lanka and her citizens
as it has failed in its duty to restore and provide for the Sinhala Nation
what is theirs rightfully despite the mandate granted to them, the UNF
at the last general election through the confidences of the people(ironically
though, outside the concensus of the overall popular vote according to
compiled statistics!~) which appear to have been misused to a great degree
and even betrayed.
On a very emotional theme in her dedication to the Nation the President
has been quoted through the written transcript presented to the rally
that she has has felt the people's need for a change of Government and
that she is ready to provide the correct leadership to the people of this
country in order for them to have expectations fulfilled.( hopefully with
no pretences towards the choice of paricipants in the form of deserters
from the UNF Camp which has causes many distresses in the past ! )
This was not a rally of imported supporters transported through incentives
and private mass transport but a gathering of a genuinely concerned and
frustrated multitude which seemed to believe that their inherant rights
could well be in jeapordy as a result of an erratic UNF Administrations
which has relied more on rhetoric rather than substance to deal with the
LTTE whose non existent right to determine the future of a Sovereign Nation
and was the pellucid theme of the Rally's address heralded by the President
in absentia at the commencement although she did arrive to mingle with
gathering eventually.
A restoration of past confidences seemed very visible through the presence
of former Foreign Minister of great charisma and dignity the indomitable
Mr.Lakshman Kadirgamar who addressed the rally in favour of the anticipated
changes indicated in the Presidential transcript and warned that the country
was faced with a great danger through the direction taken by the UNF in
collaborating with the LTTE counterproposal and this was a great opportunity
to strengthen President Kumaratunga's assertions with the support of the
people.
Almost striking home an advantage based upon the present Administration's
failure to deliver many promises while resting on the laurels of the peace
which has lasted thus far, the President in her message has emphasized
that "under a new government, the salaries of public servants and
members of the armed forces would be increased immediately and 50,000
jobs made available to absorb all the unemployed graduates and others"
which certainly augured well with the gathering which once again depicts
the contrasting and prevaricating nature of Sri Lankan Politics where
this time around there can be no excuses for failures especially if a
huge mandate to govern is supported by a Nation totally fed up with the
theatrical aspect of UNF Politics albeit the concensus of a prevailing
peace which probably needs to be ratified substantially without LTTE blackmail
where the better entity capable of ensuring and consolidating this reality
seems to be the President who certainly does not mince her words when
it comes to her responsibilities towards her country unlike her counterparts
in the opposite camp which constitutes the ruling party with their "Wait
And See" attitude.
Perhaps the words of wisdom which ended the rally on the theme that "It
was time to exercise Presidential Powers to send the UNF Administration
packing! " may prove to be the ultimate reality.
