Caution Needs To be Exercised
By The President Despite The Tone Of Resignation In LTTE Leader's Speech!
The November 17th Sri Lankan Presidential Election is now history as
the Nation gradually picks up a rational direction of progress with New
President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the helm and quite to the contrary of the
expectations of the harbingers of doom that the Southern Nationalistic
Patriotism of Rajapakse and his links with the JVP and JHU would invoke
the wrath of the 'devil 'Prabhakaran, it seems to have invoked a tiger
leader who sounded more like a purring cat despite the speculations which
have been rife upto the point of the "Hero's Day" speech of
the LTTE where it is really unsure who the "heroes "are and
whether it was in fact the real Prabhakaran who has surfaced albeit someone
indeed addressing the National Polity in the dark! someone whose presentation
has only been reported as being a public one.
So much for the nervous anticipation of the Sinhala Nation by way of pre
- Presidential Election Propaganda of a return to attrocities by the LTTE
proclaimed by the UNP Bandwagon in the event of their candidate not being
elected where former leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe has
virtually been phased out pushing him perhaps further into the twilight
of his political career and dispelling all the big talk of his former
cohorts about "What Rani Says and What Ranil Does " as the nation
has not bought the dummy he was trying to sell in his concealed collaborations
with the Tigers where he did not cross the try line, was tackled into
submission and now flounders in much doubt about his future and perhaps
even that of his party! A dummy which was probably read also by the LTTE
whose defences towards their own security has left them grasping for stability
and an inaccessible one at that where the victory belongs to President
Mahinda Rajapaksa.!
If this was indeed the real Prabhakaran it seems fascinatingly curious
that someone with such a belligerent stance against the Sinhala Nation
in the past appeared more or less subdued in the coverage of his address
where there almost appears to have been a quiet resignation in his tone
of voice which leads many discerning to wonder if this a weakening of
LTTE will based on the powerful global forces which have virtually pushed
the LTTE into a corner ostracizing them from the Global Community with
the European Union breathing fire down their necks, the International
War against Terrorism in the aftermath of the 9/11 attrocities gaining
greater momentum towards the complete elimination of terrorism and the
virtual impossibility to present themselves as the overall representatives
of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka aided greatly by the stand taken by Col.
Karuna which fortifies this concept towards reality. Simply put the LTTE
appear to be a shell of their former belligerent self where perhaps a
wealk link has been displayed in the aftermath of this speech which should
encourage the Presidency of Mahinda Rajapakse to measure future administrative
decisions bearing in mind that the LTTE maybe changing their tactical
approach towards their own survival rather than that of the people they
allegedly represent in entirety!!
There are many analysts who now believe that the restrictions imposed
on the LTTE through proscription by International Superpowers, the EU
travel bans and other related actions against the terror group seem to
have mellowed the LTTE's approach towards making a futile bid as always
to legitimize their violence yet tone down their implications in the usual
manner of pulling the wool over the eyes of the gullible while a bared
set of fangs are also visible in a last ditch effort which appeared to
be the gist of the LTTE leader's address.
Perhaps the lack of insight at leadership of the LTTE prevents them from
aligning with the reality that as long as they remain terrorists in a
world which deplores suicide bombings, killings of political leaders at
any level, child conscriptions and the rest of their mendacious modus
operandi the greater their chances of complete annihilation and their
rejection by a fair proportion of their own community indicative of the
writing being on the wall towards where they are headed and certainly
not towards a promised land which could only exist in their conjured imaginations
of ever being within the confines of Sri Lanka!! That privilege while
non existent certainly does not deny the rights of peace loving law abiding
Tamils and all other minorities in Sri Lanka to the full entitlements
of their citizenship as the new President has expressed and this latest
speech by the LTTE has to be interpreted as a positive sign towards resolution
of Sri Lanka's troubles albeith the need to be viewed with cirumspect
wisdom and caution on the part of the Administration!!
The greatest sense of LTTE dismay and resignation has been visibly expressed
in the litany of words which amount to their dissapointment and sadness
at the stand taken by the International Community represented through
the heads of Nations which have banned them outright blaming it on false
propaganda where the truth lies elsewhere and relates to the realities
of their criminality. While acknowledging the isolations and condemnations
of the International Powers who see them as armed terrorists and thereby
criminals the LTTE truly have no direction to turn to realistically other
than to accept the condemnations of their critics and resign themselves
to the due process of Justice with specific reference to their internationally
condemned leader wanted by India and the Interpol and carry no hopes towards
restitution for their criminalities which have plagued the Nation of Sri
Lanka for decades! To those who interpret the LTTE leader's speech as
sabre rattling by way of some of the rhetoric contained in it there has
to be an explaination that the LTTE have never been know to detract from
such rattlings! and as much as they choose to rattle sabres it may well
lead to their undoing sooner than later!
Even as this editorial is being written there are reports that Sri Lankan
defence lines in secured areas of the North and East are being arrogantly
patrolled at a distance by fully armed terrorists in an attempt to provoke
the Armed Forces and if this is any indication of any bluff the LTTE are
trying to pull at this instance relative to the leader's speech which
suggests resignation to the imprtance of continuing the peace within Sri
Lanka it may also come back to haunt them as this is not the trend of
thought conveyed in the latest speech by the LTTE leadership. It sounds
more aligned to a concept which was surreptitiously broadcast by someone
whom many think is the real leader of the LTTE, S.P.Thamiselvam whose
irresponsible remarks of sometime ago about their preparedness towards
confrontation might well be a representation of their real intent, hence
the caution the Sri Lankan Administration now needs to exercise despite
a thousand more speeches of resignation by any projected LTTE Leader imperative
towards avoiding coercion and wrong decision making!!!
